It's Black Saturday (Yuck Yuck) at Afronerd Radio's Grindhouse! Airing Live@6pm

Happy Post Turkey Day, folks!  Welcome to a new episode of Afronerd Radio'sGrindhouse Saturdays with airings of The Comic Shoppe and Afronerd Radio at 6pm and 7pm, respectively.  For The Comic Shoppe featuring Capt. Kirk, Daryll B. and Dburt, check out the latest musings of your "Podcast Avengers" as they discuss the following: our thoughts on the growing quality of online fan filmmakers a la the latest fantasy/non-canon matchup between Darth Vader and Batman, courtesy of Bat in the Sun Productions (wow, was it good!);  JJ Abrams' Star Wars: The Force Awakens reboot teaser trailer hits the cyberwebs;  and least we forget, the Jurassic World trailer also made its way online; what about that Concrete Park comic...why is it infectious? And lastly, (a holdover from last week), our picks of comics that should be movies/TV series and vice versa.
Next up, Afronerd Radio airing promptly at 7pm. Pull up a chair and listen to Dburt and Capt. Kirk wax politic on the following issues:  the fallout from the Ferguson grand jury decision; with socio-political opinions coming from the likes of Don Lemon and Pharrell Williams (and a faltering Cosby legacy), can Black dysfunctionalism ever be critiqued sans political correctness; NY Knick, JR Smith has a unique twist on the origins of Black Friday and finally, in the wake of the shooting death of a 12 year old with a toy gun-are Black deaths (in the media) on the rise or is it business as usual?  Call live at 646-915-9620.  Imperius Rex, brethren!

And Now For Daryll B.'s Special Thanksgiving/Black Friday Link Blog!

A Thankful AfroNerd Link-Blog?

We're swerving things up a little bit AfroNerds and Facebookers. I'm going to switch this and give you all the relevant links first then spare some crazy musings...

-First up, Kelly Thompson explains what she looks for in a book that she calls female friendly.

http://goodcomics.comicbookresources.com/2014/11/24/she-has-no-head-defining-female-friendly/

Given her reasoning here, my 3 that I am currently collecting monthly are Rachel Rising, Astro City, and Ms. Marvel. Two are  mentioned in the article itself, and Astro City gives all their characters deepness, richness along with finding new angles within tired cliches that I still state it is the perfect gateway comic for ANY fan not just gals.

-The Mission with personal favorite Will Rosado

http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=57317

I am still rooting hard for Will to get a long run with Teen Titans one day, but his Cobra run with IDW was an artistic modern classic.

-I don't know what to make of this

http://spinoff.comicbookresources.com/2014/11/24/christian-bale-admits-he-was-jealous-of-ben-afflecks-batman-role/

I would say this was birthed from a deluded fanfic but HE said it!

-Too little. Too late.

http://spinoff.comicbookresources.com/2014/11/24/legend-of-korra-returning-to-nicktoons-lineup/

So, realizing that a LOT of fans have stopped watching the channel because of how you handled this, you are going to start airing season 4 from the beginning? Problem is, those die hard fans have all found ways to keep on watching w/o your channel and all on the backstretch (Episode 9) waiting patiently for the last episodes. Whoever made the initial call on Korra needs to be demoted for not reading the fanbase right....

-Go crazy Bat-Video Game Fans...

http://comicsalliance.com/batman-arkham-knight-footage/

I can see the lines now....

-Good luck Madame Maclaren

http://comicsalliance.com/wonder-woman-michelle-maclaren-official/

Not a bad thought by Warner Bros and Ms Maclaren does have the pedigree to appease Wonder Woman fans... the question is will the higher-ups stay out of the way and not meddle with her vision for Princess Diana....

-Here we go...

http://comicsalliance.com/black-captain-america-female-thor-race-gender-superhero-comics/

Kudos to David Walker for making many of these same points on The ComicShoppe 2 weeks ago. And I said on my personal FB page that I was all for the SamCap move but then Marvel produced that Bobby Shmurda cover. He represents a lot of the stigmas that Sam Wilson has fought against/tried to change in Harlem. So Marvel essentially had the new Cap sell out his personal morals on the cover of issue #1 of his new book... *shakes head* Yeaaaaaaah insert sour taste here....

-YES! YES! YES!

http://comicsalliance.com/emily-blunt-captain-marvel/

OK if you are against this, you obviously didn't see Edge of Tomorrow. And if you didn't see Edge of Tomorrow, why are you reading my blogs in the first place? lol

-I have said it before and I will say it again, I love it when my geeky worlds collide....

http://comicbook.com/2014/11/25/cm-punk-says-farewell-to-superior-foes-of-spider-man/

Great tribute by CM Punk to the series and tone perfect to boot. I been giving Superior Foes a look through local libraries and it is in the top 3 of my list to snatch during this weekend of deals.

Now speaking of deals and the "Giving Thanks" season, here's mine in no particular order:

Thanks to my sports teams, just for good or ill, they give me a place to put my manic energy when I am not in geek mode.

Thanks to NerdCore acts for giving me the music to calm down to as the grind of work, people, and everyday life wears on me.

Thanks to my comic shop, Superhero Comics, for holding my books and being my home away from home Every Wednesday.

Thanks to those very same books for giving me interesting universes to escape into every week when real life serves to beat me down.

Thanks to my friends and family who "get" me. Who sees through & tolerate my veneers and attitude long enough to understand who exactly "Daryll"/"Ben" is. For ALL my flaws...and boy do I have a lot of them...

Thanks to anyone that has given my blogs or the ComicShoppe a chance. Lord knows I can be annoying but the fact that you gave my viewpoints a chance, agree or disagree, is greatly appreciated.

Thanks to whomever is up there, breathing me life. Every day is the chance to see something new and wondrous...even when I'm grumpy. Where there's life, there's hope folks!

Next Week, a TV breakdown for the season to date and there's a visual crossover to break down. Plus, Axis rounds the bend and we have to see if Remender can stick the landing. So Thanks For Reading & Until Next Time, Keep Fantasizing!

Daryll B.'s Comic Reviews......The Sequel!

Reviews Pt 2 With Links....

Bonus Books brought to you by an employee who REALLY needed more books to erase the day from my mind before I went home......

Bloodshot #25: Bloodshot's anniversary issue which marks the end of this series (for now) and throws a couple of curveballs into what we thought about the nanities in his blood and who exactly is in control. Makes me curious about his upcoming appearance in The Valiant.

Earth 2 World's End #7: Most likely has Batman's most bada$$ scene since entering the Earth 2 picture. I still reiterate my desire to not have the Trinity involved from last blog, but that was a cool Batman move. I can't hate on it....

Concrete Park #3: Just when you thought that some situations could not get bleaker, Tony and Erika give us that last page "To Be Continued" image. Whoa, there will have to be some major explanations in issue 4...

Fantastic Four #13: A return to the classic colors is only overshadowed by Ben Grimm machinations. Proving he isn't just a strong guy, (sorry Guido!), Ben not only engineers an escape but also has concrete reasons as to WHY he did it in such a fashion...

Axis #6: Newsflash! Tony Stark can be a d***. And a morally inverted Tony Stark can probably be that to an infinite degree. However, dude throws Daredevil off a balcony, as a party is going on and NO ONE even flinchs? That's cold. But now as cold as the 2 hour warning Apocalypse and the X-Men gave Manhattan to vacant before they start "cleansing".... and Doctor Doom?!?!? What. The. F***?!?!?!?!? So this book accomplished its mission as we go into the final book...

Astro City 17 & Tooth & Claw #1: A Kurt Busiek Two-Fer. First, Astro City continues to take comic book tropes and conventions, then proceed to turn them on its ear. I thought I had this story pegged then midway...BAM! Tragically Mind Blown.... What is the best way to describe Tooth and Claw? OK take Tellos' settings, add a BattleChasers air of intrigue, then throw that convention out because the last 12 pages makes it something you haven't read before in that setting. Magical political intrigue with a great disaster as the backdrop makes issue 2 a must read.

Heralds: Take one messed up herald of Galactus, an all star grouping of some of Marvel's best superheroines, & a waitress WAAAY out of her depth and stir. Kathryn Immonen takes an impromptu b-day party for Emma Frost and turns it into the spiritual successor to Nextwave.

Guardians of the Galaxy, The Complete DnA Collection Vol 2: Wow. Just wow. This book serves as connective tissue to War of Kings, Realm of Kings, and serves as the prelude to Thanos Imperative. In addition to that, the secret of Starhawk stands revealed, and we great more of the Original Guardians along with Killraven?!?!?!? DnA certainly packed a lot of Marvel Cosmic in these 12 issues

-#SaveStorm

http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=57213

I give Brett White credit. He sticks his neck and heart on the line for books he loves. And I have to agree that Greg Pak has done a good job with Storm.

-Just to prep you all for in 2-3 weeks time....

http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=57214

Arrow has been holding its own quality wise. The Flash has been one of the top 5 shows on TV this Fall. If this crossover fails, I will been shocked...

-Wait! What?

http://robot6.comicbookresources.com/2014/11/james-gunn-reveals-guardians-secret-awesome-mix-vol-zero/

...and a music hunting I shall go.....

-Wait! What? Part 2

http://comicsalliance.com/batman-66-the-lost-episode-review-harlan-ellison/

Harlan Ellison had a Two-Face story pitch for the Batman TV Show? And it is done as this comic? Yeahhhh, now a comic hunting I will go....again.....

-We will be getting to Convergence on The ComicShoppe in the upcoming weeks but if you can't wait for that, Chris Sims has been tracking the news over at Comics Alliance...

http://comicsalliance.com/convergence-week-two-dc-comics/

Is it little more than "Crisis" with a new hip name? We will find out.....

-...and the marriage of TV with comics continues...

http://www.newsarama.com/22791-jerry-bruckheimer-setting-up-global-frequency-tv-drama-at-fox.html

I been waiting for this for a couple of years. This is the most TV adaptable of Warren Ellis' works and one in which you could have 1 or 2 core characters and a different slate of actors/actresses for each episode. That was how the series was written and that went over awesome!!! Can you tell I highly recommend reading Global Frequency yet?

-Well we been championing for diversity with the Big Two....

http://www.newsarama.com/22776-marvel-enlisting-korean-webcomic-hero-white-fox-for-u-s-comics.html

Let's see how Marvel handles this....

-The winner of our "open mouth, insert foot" award goes to... Daniel Handler!

http://www.thismess.net/2014/11/daniel-handler-racist-jokes-and.html

Congrats to Jacqueline Woodson for winning the National Book Award for Young People's Literature for "Brown Girl Dreaming". Too bad it got overshadowed by this "example" of not thinking that has now gone viral....

In this line of thinking, my friend Christine put this article up on her blog "Madame Ostrich":

http://www.madame-ostrich.com/2014/11/19/body-diversity-fashion/

You know, as a part of the ComicShoppe, I fall prey to stereotypical "shadowing" and descriptions all the time in my quest for more minority representation within the art/entertainment subjects we cover. Whether we realize it or not, most of our views are tainted by archaic thoughts. The true measure of learning and growth is to try and rise above those thoughts. Right Mr. Handler? Size shouldn't matter. Color shouldn't matter. Gender shouldn't matter. QUALITY should...

Ah I feel cleansed... Still I going to look at The Simpsons/Futurama Crossover again before heading back to work. Folks thanks for reading and until next time, Keep Fantasizing!

Check Out The Comic Shoppe's Daryll B. and His Latest Comic Book Reviews

Hiya AfroNerds and Facebook Followers. Yeah I think I went a little overboard with last week's show so I going to dial it back a bit with views from last weekend's comic haul...

All New Ultimates #10 - The return of The Taskmaster highlights this issue as he returns on a mission that closely mirrors the Ultimate Spider-Man cartoon. Still feels like this book is rushing through the story plots...lending further credence to its (supposed) demise....

Guardians 3000 #2 - What else is new? The classic team finds itself at the crossroads of a space/time incident where everything has possibly been changed. Bright spot is that Dan Abnett has been given the freedom to explore the various histories of the team. How do I know that? 2 words: The Stark. Longtime fans know the reference, newbies will have fun finding this one out for themselves....

Miles Morales, The Ultimate Spider-Man #7 - A resolution of sorts to the Peter Parker Saga along with a final page cliffhanger that I know has long been in the thoughts of Miles' dedicated fans. Pressure is on Bendis next issue because he HAS to nail this convo. Abandonment is a sore spot with a lot of the fanbase. If this comes off as hokey or pandering, get ready for a little hate....

Earth 2 World's End #6 - Spinning its wheels, the story doesn't advance too much here. Only question in my mind here is as characters and motivations are being fleshed out, is how long is the carrot of Superman going to be dangled out there? I loved the dynamic that the original Trinity is dead and the world's heroes must find their own way without guidance. Just feels like we are slipping here....

Empire of the Dead Act Two #3 - Another book that feels like it is spinning in place, waiting for something explosive to happen. Wait something explosive did happen in the book and it still feels like nothing is being advanced. Supernatural creatures, secret clans, cloaked strike forces, questions of humanity, and I'm getting bored? C'mon Mr. Romero! I know you got the rollercoaster of fun ready here.....

Justice League United #6 - LOVED this issue as The Infinitus Saga continues on. Not only do I get The Legion of SuperHeroes and the Hawkman resurrection here but I am also getting the shadow of a couple of old DC Classic Storylines here along with cute moments. Now Jeff Lemaire, just don't half-a$$ the back half of this story after building up my hopes here....

Avengers/X-Men Axis #5 & Captain America &The Mighty Avengers #1 - For those who wondered about Spider-Man, well you get him back in Axis 5 as the inversion gets analyzed by the top cop Steve Rogers. Meanwhile, Cap & the Mighty Avengers runs concurrent to that issue. I think everyone gets the jist of the good/bad coinflip, however where did Apocalypse find another Ship so fast? I thought that was blown to smithereens. And didn't the inversion spell only just go into effect a day ago?

All New Captain America #1 - This one suffers from being released during the Axis Event. When reading the two books prior, then coming to this one, I know a few fans had to be like "what the f***? When is this happening?" Too soon to get a proper gauge on the direction.  Too muddled in the other story to judge on its' own merits....

Q2: Quantum and Woody #2 - Craziness pure and simple. Just how many Woodys are out there anyway? Christopher Priest and MD Bright certainly have my head spinning as the worst hero team ever are living up to its name. The book is living up to its past reputation when I am not even sure what side Quantum is on anymore....

Excalibur Visionaries: Warren Ellis Vol 3: Weaving stories that darted in and out of Phalanx Covenant through Onslaught/Heroes Reborn, Warren Ellis takes us through a couple of tales that blur lines between mysticism and technology. You can actually see his ideas are restrained here but fans of Ellis saw some of these ideas reach fruition in books like Planetary and The Authority...

Alpha Flight by Greg Pak & Fred Van Lente Vol 1: Just my luck that I finally break down and buy this, only to find out later that P.V.L.'s complete run is going to be collected in a single trade towards the end of the month. Argh! Anyway, this series spins out directly from Fear Itself with the return of the original team facing a very changed Canada. Pak and Van Lente definitely brought their Hercules magic over as the book has drama, humor, and tinges of betrayal/horror. If you like the classic team, keep an eye out for the complete collection....

Challengers of the Unknown by Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale: I am not afraid to admit that I am a fan of Loeb and Sale's collaborations in the past from DC and Marvel. This book is considered their first and is relatively unknown compared to The Long Halloween or Daredevil Yellow. However, I would recommend this one to anyone who loved Marvels, Mystery Men, and Dynamite's Pulp Hero revival. What are the downsides to being a very public, beloved team of adventurers? You'll find out here....

Serenity: Leaves on the Wind: This series is a direct follow up to the movie and answers a lot of questions. Where does the team go after taking some serious hits to their dynamic? What does the Government do now that the origin of the Reavers has been revealed? What about Zoe after losing Wash? Is River truly "sane"? A must read for Firefly Fans and other science fiction fans will love this just for that "space outlaw" feel....

There you go. A serious helping of books. I feel better just reading them... Thanks for reading. Until Next Time, Keep Fantasizing!

As The Scandals Mount, Time For Another Mixtape! Afronerd's Grindhouse@6pm Sat.

Greetings citizens!  Yes, we're aware that we just had a "mixtape" (Comic Shoppe+Afronerd Radio) broadcast last week, but due to more attention being raised concerning Dr. Bill Cosby, we must address that controversy in addition to current pulp/pop cultural issues.  AGAIN, welcome to this week's Grindhouse show, courtesy of Afronerd Radio airing this Saturday at 6pm (EST).  Join Daryll B., Capt. Kirk and Dburt as they wax about the following topics: the crew weighs in on the Cosby scandal as more women come forward in addition to the now viral footage of noted poet/educator, Nikki Giovanni critiquing the fallen comedian back in '07; another controversy dubbed "Shirtgate" brews over British physicist. Matt Taylor's fashion choices as he successfully landed a probe on a moving comet; a recent study found in Social Psychological and Personality Science posits that many Whites perceive Blacks to possess superhuman, if not mystical abilities (huh?);  our thoughts on what movies/TV shows should have been comics and vice versa; Universal Pictures purports to create a shared Horror Universe (a la Marvel) with less emphasis on "horror" and more action; with the onset of a successful Gotham TV series, can a Superman/Smallville prequel (Krypton) have the same mojo? and lastly, we give our general impressions of the fall sci-fi/fantasy/comic TV season thus far.  Call live at 646-915-9620.

I must admit, my glowing friend, that I do prefer the company of lions and leopards! They're much more trustworthy than the predators one finds in so-called civilization! T'challa, The Black Panther

Surely You Jest! Study Finds That Whites on a Psychological Level Perceive Blacks to Be Superhuman! Really?

OK...this can't be real but it certainly explains the awkwardness and fetishization.   According to a recent study found in Social Psychological and Personality Science, some Whites on a psychologically associative level, perceive Blacks as having superhuman abilities.  Here's an excerpt from New York Magazine pertaining to this phenomenon:

These are weird findings, to be sure, and they run contrary to what we think of when we think of racism. While most people are familiar with the idea of seeing different ethnic or religious groups as subhuman, the researchers write that "the phenomenon of superhumanization has received virtually no empirical attention in psychology." So what should we make of the fact that white people appear to "implicitly and explicitly superhumanize" black people? The authors state that more work is needed, but they suggest that superhumanization bias could help explain why black patients are undertreated for pain, for example, or why "people consider Black juveniles to be more 'adult' than White juveniles when judging culpability."

Check Out The Shoppe's Daryll B.'s Latest Link Blog!

GRRRRRRR....AfroNerd Link-Blog For 11-13-14

Howdy AfroNerd and Facebook Readers. What can I say? I making this Link-Blog thing a habit. Before I get to the links though, let me get to one particular bit of news first. Came out this Monday as a matter of fact:

http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=56995

Look, by day I work as a laborer, unloading trucks. I depend on teamwork, cooperation, and support to get my job done. Without those things, I can get nothing done efficiently in a timely fashion. I tried to be a good Marvel teammate here. I cooperated why all the supposed changes to the team and direction. I supported Trank based on my liking of Chronicle, thinking that I trusted his vision...even if the writers couldn't grasp the concept...*sigh*

F*** YOU!

This last bit of rumored news about Doom ensures that I will go into this project with serious bile and contempt. It one thing to give the Fantastic Four a little ethnic shake-up. It another to essentially give a middle finger to years upon years of FF Fans and a story that's proven to outlast any era's haters. Fantastic Four is a family of scientific adventurers/super heroes, persevering in the face of adversity and tragedy. Doctor Doom is the ruler of Latveria, super intelligent, ego-maniacal, and the team's worst enemy/greatest rival. Why is that so hard to put on film?

You change the essence of the foundation, you change the story and the characters. It becomes timeless no longer. Why is that so hard to understand FOX? SONY?  MARVEL? Yep I throwing Marvel in there for cancelling the one place we CAN get true Fantastic Four stories as this travesty happens. So you are as much to blame as FOX idiots...  SONY? Less said about your Spidey plans the better. Trouble? That's the story you looking at? Lemme guess. You want to hop on that Mark Millar bandwagon...

Again....F*** Y'ALL!

Sigh....got that out. Let's move on.....

Link Sharing Time!

Introducing Rising Tech Star of Note: Tristan Walker

If you haven't guessed, the main impetus for this site is to promulgate the dissolution of the so-called Black monolith.  The continued public and corporate support for sub par Black entertainment (as well as Black dysfunction masking as entertainment) must come to end-enter young master, Tristan Walker.  Walker initially gained notoriety as the erstwhile director of business development for Foursquare and now he's back with a new start up, Walker & Company Brands.  As an avid podcast listener (and participant/owner), it is apparent that his company's goal in targeting health and beauty brands toward folks of color must be effective because Walker's flagship brand, Bevel  (a Black male shaving line) is quite ubiquitous in the internet broadcasting world.  But what's more important to note about the Walker business is really the young ceo, himself.  Black and Brown representation in the tech field has been severely lacking and perhaps the one way to increase the minority presence is to augment public awareness. We must eschew the oft promoted notions of neo-luddism and anti-intellectualism that serve as memes within certain segments of the African-American community. Being black and tech savvy (and entrepreneurial) shouldn't be mutually exclusive.   For more on Mr. Walker's story, check out this recent article, courtesy of FastCompany.com:

Afronerd Radio Presents The Mid Week in Review, Wed@7:30pm-Current Events Plus!

Greetings!  Welcome to the latest episode of Afronerd Radio's Mid Week in Review broadcast airing this Wednesday at 7:30pm (EST).  Join your hosts, Dburt and Capt. Kirk as they "deconstruct" the (mid) week's latest stories in their own inimitable way.  The topics on the table are:  YourBlackWorld.net's Dr. Boyce Watkins' latest op-ed ponders why the highly esteemed Black Enterprise magazine reimagined basketball legend, Michael Jordan as a Black leader worthy of a fantasy placement on Mt. Rushmore; the crew got a chance to check out acclaimed director, Chris Nolan's latest celluloid venture, Interstellar; and in another movie moment, Dburt laments how the Black nerd meme stalls and the White/Asian analogue thrives after viewing Marvel/Disney's Big Hero 6 film; actor/game show host/speechwriter, Ben Stein is at again with a scathing commentary levied toward the Black underclass; The Washington Post provides yet another ponderous and indefensible disquisition on the evolution of the "n-word" (double yawn); in Blerd/Blue Area news, a former teacher develops an app that may close the achievement gap in underperforming schools and lastly, watch how a community rallies when threatened-rapper, Nicki Minaj incurs the wrath of Jewish leaders upon the release of her new video which appears to channel Nazi iconography.  Call live at 646-915-9620.
A new generation of mutants is emerging, that much is certain. They will be called freaks. Genetic monstrosities. But they are emerging in the inner cities, in the suburbs, in the deserts and the jungles. Greetings to our ever vigilant and stalwart listenership!  Don't forget to set your clocks and calendars for this Wednesday in order to listen to the latest installment of Afronerd Radio's Mid Week in Review show airing promptly at 7:30pm (EST).  Join Dburt and Capt. Kirk as they discuss the following (mid) weekly topics:  picking up where we left this past Saturday-our thoughts about a now viral street harassment video depicting a young woman being "catcalled" relentlessly; actor/game show host, Ben Stein proclaims that Pres. Obama is the "most racist racist president there has ever been in America," a Washington philanthropist and history buff pledges ro rebuild the slave quarters that were once occupied on President James Madison's Montpelier estate (c'mon Ben and Obama is the racist?  Really?); a recent NCAA legal ruling will allow famed little leaguer, Mo'ne Davis to profit on her likeness; a teacher confesses to a student that her "bucket list" would include killing Black people; and lastly, in turnabout is fair play news-did FLOTUS say to Black voters that they can reward themselves with fried chicken after they vote Democratic during the mid term elections?  Could a Black Conservative get away with that? Call live at 646-915-9620.
