Check Out Daryll B.'s Latest Link Blog Droppings!

AfroNerd Blog for 1-29-15 "Definitely Out Of My Comfort Zone"

Howdy to AfroNerd and Facebook Readers. I'm back on what possibly might be a blog that might get me more haters than I ever thought possible. And I blame Twitter but that will come later. I'll start off with the links and then go into the story and I will let you all judge because....well I don't really know how to phrase it so let's do 10 links. Then you guys and gals could roast me all you want.

-I'll start off with the important thing. In an effort to expose more people to your works, African-American/Black artists and writers?

http://goodcomics.comicbookresources.com/2015/01/26/accepting-pdf-submissions-for-a-month-of-african-american-comics/

CSBG always do a great job with these and I know a lot of guys/gals want to have their work out there. So....

-Yeah. I don't know what to feel about this...

http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=58858

Mehcad Brooks? I wish him luck as Jimmy Olsen. My problem with this is that this is Supergirl. You could introduce NEW black characters to her universe. There are not mainstays that everyone knows in Kara Zor-El/Linda Danvers life. So while I like that there will be an ethnic presence here, I didn't want it to be Jimmy Olsen ESPECIALLY when we just saw him in Man of Steel.

-While on a quest to get people pissed at me, I will say I wholehearted agree with Brett White.

http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=58854

Where are the Black Widow action figures and merchandise Disney/Marvel???? Do you really want to get the female fans angry at you? Look at GoDaddy Super Bowl Ad snafu with dog lovers. Not a good idea to get on the bad side of female fans.

-But even as I say that, I going to risk gals' ire here.

http://spinoff.comicbookresources.com/2015/01/28/possible-ghostbusters-reboot-details-revealed/

Let me just say that I have misgivings about this. Not because the team are all female but because I don't find them that FUNNY. At all... As I wrote on MC Chris' Facebook post on the subject, I'll be going in with fingers crossed and hoping for quality.

-Leave it to Chris Sims to pervert something of mine since childhood...

http://comicsalliance.com/ivar-timewalker-review-valiant-van-lente-henry-reber/

...and be TOTALLY CORRECT! Ivar is like John Hurt's War Doctor except "younger" and less quippy. Like I said on last week's ComicShoppe, most of what Valiant has done in its return so far seems to be quality.

-I have been loving this story

http://comicsalliance.com/street-artists-use-ms-marvel-to-fight-real-life-intolerance/

Take that ignorant people! No set of people is all "good" or "bad", no matter how much you want to believe that.

-So this came out this week...

http://comicsalliance.com/fantastic-four-2015-teaser-trailer/

I can't wait to hear Captain's take on this. I found the teaser trailer to be meh but definitely not a disaster.

-Ladies, here's my olive branch...

http://comicsalliance.com/why-is-nightwing-hot/

I am not even going to go in-depth into this one.

-Nearly forgot my mission to share "The Mission"

http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=58791

Mr. Illidge does bring up a great point. In our joy and speculating about the NEW Milestone, we totally overlooked Michael Davis. Where is he? What has he been doing? Is he The Fourth Man? Is he the new Keyser Soze? Is he an international man of mystery now? Yeah I know I am babbling but I love a good mystery and I hope Mr. Davis' return to comics will be mindblowingly awesome!

-So now the article that helped me get in trouble this week...

http://blackgirlnerds.com/nerd-meets-lame/

Bravo Lindsey for this. Even though I am of the male gender, this can so represent me as well. I am that awkward nerd. Not so smart to be in Neil DeGrasse Tyson territory, not dumb enough to fit in with the jock set. Even though I am a sports junkie. I constantly feel like an outsider, even in the midst of my friends and family. They don't get it, they'll unfortunately will never get it but I have accepted that this is going to be my station in life. It has only taken 38 years of experience, some pain, and a whole lot of tears for me to do so.

However, as of Monday, I am now a part of Twitter and what do I see trending the instant I got on? A memorial to a girl who committed suicide. Her friends and family said that they hoped her death would make a difference and be a beacon to those who are bullied. A few weeks ago, it was a trans-student that committed suicide, hoping that in death it who make a difference to those who are going through the same thing.

BULLS***

Death is it. No one knows what is on the other side. The biggest difference/symbol you can have on the world is by persevering within it. In death you leave a void within your family and friends that no one can fill. I was bullied for years to the point that my self-confidence fluctuates from day to day. My social skills vary from absurd to outrageous on the anti-social scale ESPECIALLY around beautiful women.

HOWEVER

Each day is worth living to me. I may say I don't have many true friends but I have enough people thanks to Facebook and now Twitter that I can look to and laugh and forget my problems for a little while. Why willingly give up on living when there is so much to do, so much to see, and so much to experience? Young people in the world if you take one thing out of this mini-lecture, take this: Life is never a deadend for each new day is one filled with hope. Life is never easy for any of us. There is always someone to talk to. Please, if you need help, you have a multitude of paths to get it.

I have my own brushes with death in my past. I NEVER want to be that low again. With my friends and experiences with life, I'll NEVER be again. *knocks on wood*

Thanks for reading and once again, if I pissed any of you off, I'm sorry. I just had to get it off my chest.

Until Next Time, Keep Fantasizing.

Check Out Daryll B's Schomburg Black Comic Book Festival Synopsis!

What An AfroNerd Weekend! So, So Much To Talk About

As I lie here, both my computer and I are in recovery. Me, from a wild weekend and work. The laptop from an unexpected crash due to, well, I don't know what. So this blog will be a little scattered since my original version was unrecoverable. However, I got news from EVERYWHERE.. So strap yourselves in AfroNerd and Facebook Readers...this will be a doozy.

First up, a couple of misadventures on Friday led me to my bud Jeff's Time Warp comic store in Hewlett, Long Island before work. You already know me folks, if I go in I have to pick up books. This time I came out with Superman/Batman Sorcerer KingsThe Unbeatable Squirrel-Girl #1, and Nu52 Flash Vol. 2 Rogues Revolution.

The Superman and Batman graphic goes from the past to the alternate future to even DC One Million. It obvious that writer Cullen Bunn had a field day with some of the crazier aspects of the DC Universe in what was probably one of the last runs before the Nu52 switch. Highlight of the book for me was seeing "Warlock Batman". Yep you read that right...and I am not even going to try to explain it. Just go to your local library or comic shop and check it out for yourselves...

If you have a member of your family or friend circle that liked Franklin Richards Son of a Genius or the Lumberjanes series, point them towards Squirrel-Girl. It is every bit over the top in the comical sense like a Deadpool or 'Mazing Man but has the cuteness factor of Peanuts. Heck, if you got a friend that likes the comic stylings of the webcomic Girls With Slingshots, point them this way as well. I have to admit to laughing out loud on the bus three or four times reading this as I went to work. Ryan North and Erika Henderson have got a hit here.....

Seeing how the following Tuesday was going to be the debut of the Captain Cold/Heat Wave partnership on The Flash TV Show, I couldn't resist picking up the 2nd Volume of the Nu52 version titled "Rogues Revolution". Now with that out of the way, let me just state that the main story (and actually like Supes/Bats before) is the 3rd story in this collection as the Rogues got after Captain Cold. Yes you read that right too! And this is right after Flash faces Grodd for the first time AND then runs into Weather Wizard on foreign soil. Francis Manapul and Brian Buccellato are certainly taking familiar concepts and turning up the frenetic pace here...

Saturday... AfroNerd, Captain Kirk, and I traveled to the Schomburg Center in Harlem for the Black Comic-Con and as expected we geeked out....Ok Ok I geeked out. Let me be honest first, I was afraid that having this one AND one in San Francisco at the same time would dilute the experience. Let me tell you that I am quite happy to be oh so wrong. Highlights during our time there were:

-Seeing Professor Ben Foster doing his thing on the vendor floor, greeting and talking to EVERYONE. Man is probably our elder statesman yet has a seemingly infinite battery when it comes to conventions. I feel old seeing him in action.

-Visiting N Steven Harris' table and getting my hands on not only Voltron Volume 2 but also the original 6 issue Dreamwave GI Joe-Transformers series. I couldn't find it in its entirety for years and now I have it. *Salivating*

-Getting into the Publisher's Panel which was moderated by John Jennings (SUNY Buffalo/Kid Code) with Zetta Elliott (The Deep), Alex Simmons (BlackJack), and Tim Fielder (Matty’s Rocket). First off, John Jennings, along with Jerry Craft, helped organize the convention here AND the one that happened in San Francisco. Secondly, Alex Simmons' bantering with Tim Fielder was HILARIOUS! I managed to pick up two of Mr. Simmons' Blackjack books and really have to get in touch with Mr. Fielder to come on The ComicShoppe for a future episode. Finally, my biggest regret this year was not remembering to visit Zetta Elliot's table. I love the look of The Deep and that along with Fielder's Matty's Rocket are on my must get list now.

-In between panels, we met the lads from Black Nerd Problems (http://blacknerdproblems.com/site/ ) for a mutual admiration 5 minute pow-wow. Omar and Jordan make me proud just by doing their thing. Keep going strong guys and if you are interested in their views on the show well...

http://blacknerdproblems.com/site/3rd-annual-black-comic-book-festival/

-We also got to meet Gan Golan and Betsy Richards with their mini manager, the creators of the comic Helvetika Bold. Picture Wonder Woman crossed with Foxy Brown in an early '70s comic. Complete with parodies of the classic comic book ads like x-ray glasses and decoder rings. The great thing about this was the joy and enthusiasm that Gan and Betsy had not only for their book but for the convention itself. That fun never gets old.

-It is time for the main event: we sat in on the Controlling Our Images Panel which was moderated by Regine Sawyer (Lockett Down Productions) with Msindo Kuumba (Art Director/2D Lead Artist/Visual Artist), Grey Williamson (Artist/Author), Robert Garrett (Xmoor Studios), and Alithia Martinez (Artist/Author). OHMIGOSH was this a spirited panel. Let me say that Msindo is a fantastic creator but he has a career as a motivation speaker and guide. His stories mesmerized the audience and hopefully lit a creative fire in some. Mr. Garrett was soft spoken but you could see the knowledge and years of experience with in him. Also I am not abashed to say that seeing the verbal jousting between Mr. Williamson and Ms. Martinez was thought provoking and seriously, if they got a podcast show in the vein of His and Hers about the industry, it would be a must listen to for everyone. I was worn out after this but inspired.

So many young faces. So many smiles. I hope that the con does it again next year with as much fervor. BTW for views about the San Francisco convention, Nerds of Colorhas got you covered here...

Sunday. Yeah Daryll B. had a little too much to drink Saturday Night with the buds after the comic-con and had to sober up to watch the NFL Championship Games. So I popped on Zombie With A Shotgun which I was planning to review for a later show. The 5 episode web serial by Hilton Ruiz is about, well, you see the title.

Episode 1: https://t.co/QbphhfYj24 and the other episodes can be seen on Vimeo

ZWAS runs approximately 5 minutes and up per episode and is a prime example of what I have been talking about. We have the means now to make whatever you want, whenever you want. Mr. Ruiz knows what he's shooting here and doesn't try to go over the top with the premise. The interesting thing about the story is that the hero is slowly turning and we all know he is going to turn but that isn't rushed. That builds up the suspense even more for the audience, who will wonder which traumatic situation will be the one to force the "final change". I often say that in things like this, I often gauge the actors/actresses to see how "into" the project they are and let me tell you, this looked like everyone had a blast. So much so that guess what's getting the graphic novel treatment and a movie poster? Yep. Zombie With A Shotgun. Look at the first episode...preferably with the lights on and a bulletproof vest. Make the choice for yourself. If you liked Project Terror from Grindhouse, I think you will like these webisodes.

Can you believe I have room for links too?

-So I guess you have heard the news by now.....

http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=58666

http://comicsalliance.com/cowan-hudlin-and-dingle-to-launch-milestone-media-2-0/

That's right! Milestone is on its way BACK! Static gets a live action treatment and now I might get Blood Syndicate back?!?!?! Come on 2015 with your bad self!

-Brett White is of 2 minds concerning the Marvel Universe "ending" news...

http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=58667

As a guy who has used the "good" me/"bad" me method in blogs before, this was HILARIOUS!!! I hope the event is half as funny as this was. Good job Brett! Speaking of funny...

http://comicsalliance.com/secret-wars-bendis-seth-meyers-late-night/

Well we know who in the crowd are actual comic book fans now. Posers. Sorry. I know I have to be more tolerant but some of those fakers are symbolic of a trend of fakery going on prime time right now...(See Obama's State of the Union speech and Congress' reaction to his statement about treating Muslims fairly. Yep I went there. Equal rights my black fanny!)

-I often talk about music. Well on Fandomania, Chad lists his favorite geek music albums of 2014.

http://fandomania.com/chads-favorite-geek-music-of-2014/

If you read any of my blogs last year, I know you recognized at least 6 of these albums...

-First Tom Hardy, now Jake Gyllenhaal

http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=58672

Didn't I tell you all that DC had to "prove" it to me? You went on blast with this killer lineup Warner Bros and now parts are dropping off...

-To wrap this up, Mr. Illidge? Take it away....

http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=58602

I knew of Ms. Carter's lineage however I bet you some of her Wonder Woman admirers just had to do a spit take. Yes ladies and gents, we have had a Latina Wonder Woman and you ADORED her. Oh this is PRICELESS!!!

OK I am tired. That was a lot of words but AWESOME memories. Thank you all who made it to the end of this. I adore you all. I need sleep. Until Next Time Readers, Keep Fantasizing!

The Return of Milestone Media! Mr. Dwayne McDuffie's Ghost is Smiling!

I must confess that I was a late comer to Milestone Media during it's first incarnation in the early 1990s. Much like comic book aficionados today, my brand awareness had blinders toward the big two (Marvel and DC, for the uninitiated).  And as pro-Black/pro-minority I may consider myself, I don't recollect being so ethnocentric as it pertains to the nascent period of my comic book collecting and therefore, the historical and cultural importance of Milestone Media fell on my deaf ears.  That was then and this is now.  I am extremely elated that the remaining principals of Milestone, Derek Dingle and Denys Cowyn (and now with the addition of filmmaker, Reginald Hudlin) in continuance of the work of their late colleague, Dwayne McDuffie, are resurrecting the famed Black owned comics company that originally closed its doors back in '97.  Here's more to chew on with Milestone's reemergence, courtesy of io9.com:

Sorry, Secret Wars. In the inarguably best comic news of the week, original co-publisher Derek Dingle, along with writer/producer Reggie Hudlin and artist Denys Cowyn, is resurrecting the late Dwayne McDuffie's Milestone Media, best known as the home of beloved character Static Shock.
Most comic fans know McDuffie's name, and how he died in 2011 at only age 49. Before his death, he was a prolific writer of comics and animation (he wrote many a great DCAU episode) but also formed Milestone with Dingle in an attempt to bring diversity to superhero comics. He created or helped create heroes like Static, Hardware and more, and Milestone was absolutely the preeminent black comics company before it shut down in 1997.
According to the Washington Post, Dingle, Hudlin and Cowyn have brought back Milestone Media as a way to honor McDuffie, as well as continue his work. But they want to do far more than just trot out the publisher's classic characters.
Yet Cowan says that putting a character of color in a well-known, previously white mantle doesn't hold the same impact as creating a new wave of heroes for an ever-diverse readership and new generations of fans.
"There are all kinds of challenges that are facing people of color — that part hasn't changed," Cowan tells The Post's Comic Riffs. "What has changed is, there are a lot more characters of color in comics. What we feel is now, Milestone is necessary because of the types of characters that we do, and the viewpoint that we come from."
There's no set date for Milestone's officially return to comic stores, but Dingle and the others hope to have some news for this year's Comic-Con. If you have the time, I highly recommend you read the Post article about the new Milestone and Dwayne McDuffie's legacy — and why the publisher's return is such good news indeed.

Part 2 of Daryll B.'s Blog Droppings! Onward & Upward to NYC's Black Comic Con!

Is Daryll Still Alive in there? He went into the room a day ago....

Getting ready to go to Black Comic-Con at Schomburg Center in Harlem today but I have unfinished business with you AfroNerd and Facebook Readers. SO before I get into reviews, DC released descriptions for Week 3 of Convergence and well, those who love to shovel dirt on me get more ammo:

Week Three by    Writer(s)     Artist(s)  Hook

Adventures of Superman #1-2 by Marv Wolfman, Roberto Viacava and Andy Owens - Pre-Crisis Supergirl returns
The Flash #1-2 by Dan Abnett with Federico Dallocchio - All the talking up I have done about Dan Abnett and he gets his hands on The Flash.
Hawkman #1-2 by Jeff Parker, Tim Truman and Enrique Alcatena - Another favorite writer of mine Jeff Parker gets his hands on of the most historically confusing heroes of all time. But from his Agents of Atlas and Aquaman work, Parker should make Hawkman *gasp* fun....
Justice League America #1-2 by Fabian Nicieza and Chriscross - 3 words: Detroit. Justice. League.
New Teen Titans #1-2 by Marv Wolfman, Nicola Scott and Marc Deering - ANOTHER favorite writer, drawn by the fabulous Nicola Scott featuring MY TITANS vs the Tangent Universe's Doom Patrol.
Superboy and the Legion of Super-Heroes #1-2 by Stuart Moore, Gus Storms and Mark Farmer - Come on. It the Legion of Super-Heroes. You KNOW I have to pick this up...

Another 6 out of 11 week....then Week Four I get

Booster Gold #1-2 by Dan Jurgens, Alvaro Martinez and Raul Fernandez
Infinity Inc. #1-2 by Jerry Ordway and Ben Caldwell
Justice Society of America #1-2 by Dan Abnett, Tom Derenick and Trevor Scott
World’s Finest Comics #1-2 by Paul Levitz, Jim Fern and Joe Rubinstein
Crime Syndicate #1-2 by Brian Buccellato and Phil Winslade
Blue Beetle #1-2 by Scott Lobdell & Yishan Li
Shazam #1-2 by Jeff Parker and Evan “Doc” Shaner
Plastic Man and the Freedom Fighters #1-2 by Simon Oliver & John Mccrea

That's another 8 out of 11 WITHOUT solicitations but only by my love of the characters alone. Throw in the 8 main parts of the event and I am getting 36 out of 48 books. Yeah I know I have to make cuts without having to rob a bank but like I said last blog: DC you win! I stand defeated.... Now let me get to reviewing....

Earth 2 Worlds End 15 - Got to admit, I didn't think they would  have the guts to do it but..... with the world going to heck, I guess there was no choice. I am also enjoying the angsty Dick Grayson... never thought I'd say that.....

Q2: The Return of Quantum and Woody 4 - Yeah, I going to need a scorecard now. So many iterations that I am confused as to who's who... Then BAM! It makes sense... Only in Q&W folks...

Justice League United 8 - This did feel like wheels were spinning until the last act (5 pages) and then 2 sides of worst case scenarios played simultaneously.... but I have an abundance of Legionnaires now...

All New Captain America 3 - First one of the new series where Sam Wilson actually acted AND felt like Captain America. Still, Marvel, with that cover are you guys tone deaf to the news over the last 3 or 4 months? The NFL is STILL dealing with these issue ya know?!?!?!?

Miles Morales, Ultimate Spider-Man 9 - *CLAPS* Thank you Mr. Bendis for sticking this landing. I will gladly eat my plate of crow because not only did Mr. Morales' secret origin make sense...but you made his abandoning of Miles ring truly realistic... just as Miles' world is about to get rocked..(judging by the last page picture and revelations we know are upcoming from issue 7!)

Astro City 19 - Continued Quarrel's Origin and they get further into the ties between her and Crackerjack. Imagine the Green Arrow-Black Canary relationship crossed with Charlie Brown and Lucy's. Then toss in the old anything you can do I can do better Like Mike commercials from the 90's. I was equal parts absorbed and laughing hard at this one...

Star Wars 1 - Wow. This one hit the warp drive running. I am of two minds regarding Jason Aaron's writing but here...it felt o so natural and right. John Cassaday's art was on point and once again, that last page. Star Wars Purists might be equal parts pissed and intrigued but the image will have EVERYONE coming back for issue 2....

For those who are digging Agent Carter on TV right now, I can't recommend Operation S.I.N. #1 enough. Katheryn Immonen captures the Carter-Stark relationship perfectly...

I know it says it on the cover, but little kid in me wasn't ready for the events in Battlestar Galactica Death of Apollo #2. Damn dirty Cylons....

PICK UP SHAFT #2...lol. I can't hype up the book enough for example last week we had writer David Walker back on:

http://www.blogtalkradio.com/afronerd/2015/01/10/agent-carter-ant-man-more-the-grindhouse-saturday-6pm-est

...yeah we really love this book..as  if you couldn't tell....

Star Trek/Planet of the Apes #1.... As if I couldn't resist picking this one up? This book is like Daryll specific crack. Damn you Dynamite!

Empire of the Dead Act Two #5..."And then everything comes to a head. At all once. As we fade to black..."  I have to wait until April for the final act to start...GRRRRR

S.H.I.E.L.D. #1 & 2...If you love Agent Coulson, pick this up. If you love Fitz and Simmons, pick this up. If you crave to see the TV show team interact with the literary Marvel Universe...what the crikey are you waiting for? Pick it up!

S.I.P. Kids #2 is the perfect book for Strangers in Paradise fans who adore Charlie Brown and Peanuts... Slapstick adolescent moments with an undercurrent of whoa for those who remember the kiddos' grown up selves....

Captain America and the Mighty Avengers #3 sees the team take on the inverted Avengers from Axis. Yeahhhh... I can't wait to see the ramifications from this because there is NO WAY to smooth over some of the conflicts here neatly....

Ant-Man #1 sees Scott Lang acting more like Eric O'Grady than Hank Pym...but there is no denying that the never-do-well type bad luck has a way of pulling the reader in to sympathize with the main character. Especially in terms of him trying to be a good dad.....

Guardians 3000 #4 has one of my favorite 90's characters return at the end of the book as we delve into an updated retelling of Vance Astro's origin. Book reads like an intensive information dump but I liking it as it hopefully foreshadows an insane rollercoaster ride upcoming for the heroes.....

All New Ultimates #10 marks the end of the book unfortunately bit Fiffe, ends up tying up all the plots in a nice bow. My gripe: I wish this issue's artist worked the whole book. I am not ashamed to admit that I like "clean" superhero art and the book did not have it...until the end..

Astonishing Spider-Man and Wolverine sees, in my opinion, the two sides of Jason Aaron's writing. The first two issues are confusing but intriguing. The remaining issues are an insane ride of emotions for the titular hero "team". Andy Kubert kills the art here as his fight scenes and quiet moments are top notch and I got to admit, this is one of Aaron's better works....

*PHEW* That's a lot of books...and I have the Black Comic-Con at Schomburg Center in Harlem coming up in a few hours. Yeah. Mind? What mind? Folks that stuck through this insane rambling journey of mine? Know that I appreciate you giving me your time...even if it is to laugh at my ass. I can't do this without y'all.

Next week, get ready for me to delve into the realm of horror for a bit and I try to see if my wallet can survive another comic shoppe trip. Right now, I have to get to the show. Until Next Week, Keep Fantasizing!
