Leonard Nimoy Beams Up One Last Time, Next Grindhouse-Saturday @6pm

Greetings to our stalwart fanbase!  Well, one of the bricks from the foundation of the house that nerd built has been removed-actor, Leonard Nimoy passes at 83.  For obvious and appropriate reasons we will discuss Mr. Nimoy's career and his placement in the pantheon of American (if not, international) popular culture.  Join Dburt, Capt. Kirk and Daryll B. for a new episode of The Grindhouse Mashupcourtesy of Afronerd Radio airing this Saturday at 6pm.  Additional topics to be disassembled and then reassembled in our metaphysical transporter room are: speculations on what big announcement Robert Downey Jr and Marvel are slated to make in the next few days; our thoughts about the internet NSFW version of the Power Rangers short; after Gotham's grisly episode involving Jada Pinkett Smith's Fish Mooney character, can the character continue in the series and is there a possible transition to the print world?; hat tip to Shadow and Act for highlighting an upcoming African themed animated movie entitled, Bilal starring Lost's Mr. Echo (or the more fearsome Adebisi of Oz) himself, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje; as great and as crucial the movie, Selma may be, Dburt ponders other historical events that are ready for a cinematic "closeup"; more hair politics after the Zendaya-Rancic televised fallout; Monique vs Lee Daniels vs Hollywood and lastly, more on entertainment entrepreneur, Byron Allen's lawsuit against Time Warner cable (incl. Rev Al "black pawn" allegations).  Call the hosts live at 646-915-9620.  And in the immortal words of Spock-"once you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth."

Once Again, Daryll is Sour AfroBlog....

Dear Academy Awards,

You complain about not getting as many viewers as years' past but a) you diss "popular" movies and their fanbases openly... the very movies that are CARRYING your industry at the moment & b) you continuously go out of your way to ostracize certain races and movies in your nominations. Then wonder why you lost viewers in the ratings. I love James Gunn for striking back at you smug idiots for all the potshots taken at Superhero Movies. Yet, you gave your big award to Birdman, which wouldn't exist without them. And half of your presenters on stage either are already in or going to be in superhero fare.

Speaking of which, the actors and actresses could give all the political and social stances in their victory speeches that they want. Did any of them actually touch on this point? Nope. All were content that an award to Common and John Legend would be enough. Not. Even. Close.

There are still valid reasons why the MTV Movie Awards and the Spike Movie Awards mean more to me than you do. I just said that MTV and Spike TV meant more to me than you do. You don't think that is a problem? Look and learn you self-centered hypocrites. But you take too long and the world passes you by. Remember that as you continue your platitudes.

Sincerely,

*Sigh* I guess I should have seen that CBS wouldn't want to greenlight this and bank on a new core cast around Kara/Linda. There had to be some Superman cast/gallery crossover but... this is an opportunity lost to make Supergirl her own hero in another medium.

Unfortunately, the Power Rangers controllers didn't find the dark humor associated with their fan film and had it pulled. However, James VanDerBeek and Katee Sachoff do a great job as older versions of the cheesy heroes and it was made by the same gentleman who was behind Punisher: Dirty Laundry.

The Dragonball Z pilot is still available and is made by the same folks who were behind the recent Street Fighter live action web series. It is based on the History of Trunks movie and looks cool as heck. It available at the link above and on YouTube....

A brief one this week as computer problems and personal issues keep me grounded. Thanks for reading and Until Next Time, Keep Fantasizing!

Daryll B's (Not so) Latest Link Blog! One AfroNerd vs Addictive TV... Boy Did I Lose & WIN!!!

Busy, busy time in television for yours truly as I have focused on comics and film since the new year has started. But this week had 3 things that got me revved up. First was Tuesday Night!

The Flash Recap

http://spinoff.comicbookresources.com/2015/02/18/the-flash-recap-the-fallout-extends-beyond-firestorm-storyline/

The Agent Carter Recap

http://comicsalliance.com/agent-carter-season-1-recap-episode-7-snafu/

The two shows were so exciting that I, even knowing the hiccups/plotholes, was TOTALLY geeking out. Now I said hiccups and in that I mean I STILL think The Flash is going a little fast with the reveals Then hits us in the gut with it will be back in a month with Harrison Wells essentially outing himself. ALREADY??? And you give that away in a preview for the next show? A MONTH AWAY? ARGGGHHH!!!!! Are you guys at the CW taking lessons from Marvel on how to publicize stories? Way to kill suspense... but the final scene happened before that and Grodd obscures all!

Then over at Agent Carter...sure I get a MadBomb which is totally awesome to a continuity geek like me but I have to ask the question, yet again, how do you put the associate of Captain America as an underling to green-ish agents? Come on. No one found it peculiar about the Russian's insistence to CONSISTENTLY be by the window? In a spy headquarters? Worst. Spies. EVER. However, I find Dottie intriguing and the Jarvis/Peggy banter in this episode was top notch... ESPECIALLY the handcuffed to a table scene. Classic!

Wednesday happened which gave me....

The Arrow Preview

http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=59407

..and now I have to say that someone in the CW's offices must have that remote control from the movie Click. Why? Damn they blew through the Ollie reveals to Thea who she killed subplot FAST! I thought that they would have waited until Ra's entrance into Starling City for that tidbit to bubble to the surface. And on top of that, this was a flashback heavy episode about Ollie's "first return" to the city. That meant one Diggle scene, one Felicity scene, no Ray Palmer, and no Arsenal. However, what saved this was Pa Lance, who gave a manic performance in the past AND present with Laurel. Ramifications will be felt here folks...

However, the major impetus for this blog was one little comment made on Twitter during BGN's Sleepy Hollow group watch/twitter chat. Essentially the commenter equated Katia Winter as Katrina to Jenna Coleman as Clara on Doctor Who as being grating to fans at large who enjoyed the dynamic of the leads before they became more important. I told folks that the person was on point with the theory, and even had the right show but had the wrong actress.

You see, I equate the fans bad feelings/hatred toward Katrina to the bile I saw directed towards Freema Agyeman a.k.a Martha Jones by Whovians. When Doctor Who returned with Billie Piper as Rose Tyler being The Doctor's Companion, the new generation of fans fell for her IMMEDIATELY. She was adored and these fans thought Rose would be there forever. However, as is the want with Doctor Who mythos, change is the only constant. Piper was out, with a happy ending to her story mind you, and Agyeman as Dr. Martha Jones was in. I loved her in the role but I can admit that the writers wrote her too smitten with The Doctor. This writing drove the Rose Fanbase nuts and as a result, some of them took it out on Jones.

This is what some of the Sleepy Hollow Fans have been doing with Katrina, EVEN with Crane AND Abbie both stating how much he was still in love with his wife. Fans were just too "into" the Crane/Abbie dynamic that now with Katrina's return, it was inevitable that there was going to be some resistance. So it up to Sleepy Hollow's writers and Ms. Winter to bring out Katrina's full dimension/personality. Monday's episode was a start, let's see if Next Monday if they can stick the landing!

You know, if Bitch Planet is optioned to be a movie, someone get Robert Rodriguez on the phone NOW!

-I know on the last show I provided a way to introduce Miles Morales into the Cinematic Marvel Universe but Mr. Illidge on this week's The Color Barrier throws a little cold water on me....

Well. He does have valid points...to my rational side....but my heart says "Do it! Do it now!"

Yeah. I got a little angry. Sorry about that folks. But those that know me for awhile know how much I hold little league to a high esteem. Some of the best times of my life were playing and coaching and this...THIS was yet another shot to the gut of something I value.

-Convergence is coming. So of course Newsarama had to do a little back time research...

-Getting closer to the premiere...

Ironically, this reminded me to finally pick up the last collection of the series BEFORE the relaunch and DAMN if that didn't knock me on my arse.... I don't know about the show, but by gosh Bendis' Powers, that last GN was AWESOME!

-Congratulations!

http://comicsalliance.com/first-dwayne-mcduffie-diversity-award-nominees/

I have read 4 of the 5 nominees: you guys already know where I hold Shaft and Ms. Marvel. Gene Luen Yang's work on The Shadow Hero with Sonny Liew is along with his work on Avatar is why I love him on Superman post-Convergence. And Nilah Magruder's M.F.K. is an interesting webcomic about reluctant youth against the system. The only one I haven't read/heard of before this is Lisa K. Weber and Kelly Sue Milano's Hex11. But if it is thought of that highly to be put in this much quality? I have to hunt it down.

-Speaking of Shaft...

Let the fantasy role-casting begin!

Good luck to Ariell Johnson and I hope to pass through in the future when I am in Philly. Thanks to Madame Broadnax and BlackGirlNerds for the article.

It's Not a Bird or a Plane But It's Daryll B.'s Latest Blog Droppings with a Touch of Sports Musings!

The Sports and Nerd Worlds of Daryll Collide & All I Got is a Fractured Mind....

Welcome to another mashup thought blog readers. This is where my worlds of geek and jock combine, hopefully enlightening or infuriating y'all as to the other world I pass through. First up, I am going to be a little wistful...

NCAA

So this week College Basketball Fans lost Dean Smith and Jerry Tarkanian. Dean Smith as coach of North Carolina, was pure class on and off the court. A lot of folks don't realize how integral he was in desegregating Chapel Hill and surrounding areas around campus. He discovered Michael Jordan and James Worthy, but was able to mold lesser players into his system as well. Jerry Tarkanian, as coach of Long Beach St and the more well known UNLV Runnin' Rebels was the ultimate outlaw. He wasn't afraid to coach the bad eggs and push/challenge them in practice. Both men were "hard" on their players but you never heard any of them rip their coaching methods. This is something that is all but lost in today's game. Condolences to their family and friends...and Thank You.

Sigh St. John's you guys are cutting this close. Get hot in the Big East already!

Anybody else think that Syracuse is trying to get away with a fast one here? Yeah...

People could rank South Carolina #1 on the ladies side all they want, I was like "We'll see how good they actually are when they visit Storrs" Well they did this past Monday and Auriemma's Lady Huskies beat them by 20. The road to the title still goes through Connecticut folks.

NHL

Buffalo just stole Evander Kane folks. Now it on Kane to prove Winnipeg's Coach wrong everyday by playing outstanding when he returns from injury.

The Rangers without Lundquivst for a month. Part of me is breathing a sigh of relief when you saw where that puck hit on his head/jaw/neck. Part of
me is hoping Talbot can rise to the occasion. Part is freaking out because it time for the playoff rush and the East is so close that this injury might really, REALLY hurt.

The more I see of Nashville, the more I am impressed at what a throwback the team is in that their offense is keyed by great defense.

NBA

One last time, Carmelo just shut it down already!!!

I guess with the Cavaliers winning the media needs to create drama hence the James/Love/Twitter BS that sports outlets  are running with EVERY NIGHT....

Magic, please shut up! Concentrate on your underachieving Dodgers. And you guys know how much I love Magic but...SHEESH!

I'm not even going to waste word space here on James Dolan but instead my prayers go out to the friends and family of Anthony Mason. He's a fighter and won't go out easy. Be strong Mase!

NASCAR

3 Things I looking at this season since we are now 10 days away from Daytona:

1) Carl Edwards in his new digs at Gibbs. How long will it take him to get adjusted?
2) Put up or shut up time for Danica Patrick. Last year secure in that original contract, she needs consistent top 20 finishes this year to get a new one.
3) Team foundation and leadership changes at Hendrick Motorsports. Gordon on his way out. Let's see how the top team in the circuit copes....

FUTBOL

Told you folks that Barcelona wasn't dead. Now they are on top of La Liga....

3rd through 7th in the Premier League separated by 5 points. 13 matches remaining. Only 3 will get European Tournament spots.

Nice to know that the USA Men can win a match. Been a minute....

OK USA Ladies. I hope you take away a valuable lesson in that loss at France. The European teams are getting better and their sights are on you. Take advantage of your chances gals or else these other teams will.....

LITTLE LEAGUE

As I told people on Facebook about the Jackie Robinson Little League "scandal", I heard from someone awhile ago that as a minority that succeeds has to make sure everything is above board. The fact you succeed means that you'll be scrutinized even more just because you "shouldn't" be able to. The adults of the little league let those kids down pure and simple. Perhaps without the landzone "rezoning" the team would have won but we won't know now will we...

Biggest losers in all of this are the kids of the team who will be tainted when all they just wanted to have fun. It was the adults' greed that got in the way.

To my Sports Readers, this is the end for now and I'll See You in the Stands. If you are interested in the comics, science fiction, and fantasy worlds, stick around for the AfroNerd portion starting in 3, 2,  1....

***Daryll changes from uniform to geek wear with a.....**** WHOOSH!!!!

Let's jump to some links Folks!

The Color Barrier takes a close look at 3 of the post Convergence books. Coincedently, a certain manic blogger mentioned each of these on last week's Grindhouse show...

Conner and Palmiotti do great work and I guess I should consider that they'll knock Starfire out of the park post-Convergence. But my love for the pre52 Starfire still prevents me from going all in....

Happy Anniversary!

Again THANK YOU Hugh Jackman

http://comicsalliance.com/hugh-jackman-reaction-marvel-spider-man/

Why? He's the big name that first approached the subject for the X-Men and Spidey to be in Avengers in some fashion. Sure e-mails got hacked and released. Sure the last Amazing Spider-Man didn't meet expectations. Sure us comic book fans have been plotting this for months...but JACKMAN was the first STAR to say it so that EVERYONE noticed.... Thank You Hugh!

..but that leads to question most of our fans want to know...

Miles Morales? Pandora's Box people....! My little black geek heart is going YES! YES! YES! of course but I think Marvel will want to establish their own Peter Parker first.....

...but nothing says that you can't have that AND Miles Morales Marvel. MAKE. IT. SO!!!

*PHEW!* I'm exhausted...and I didn't even get into The Flash opening the door for Flashpoint AND a kicka$$ Firestorm this week. Or the Marvel Netflix Casting News. Yeah, we'll get into that on Saturday. Right Now, I gonna get some shut-eye. Thanks for reading and Until Next Time, Keep Fantasizing!
