Even More Blog Drops Thanks to Daryll B-part #, folks

Yeah...I got nothing left....

Part 3 of Daryll's Brain Meltdown and I begin with...

WWE

So let me get this straight, the WWE disassociate all ties with Hulk Hogan because of that racist rant caught on video. OK, I'm a hardcore wrestling WWE and wrestling fan, so let's look at your record with black folk WWE.

-We can only be singing, thieving, dancing, religious, monstrous, or looking for our momma.
-The instant we divert from those paths, they are reinforced within our characters almost immediately.
-A perfect example is wrestling in front of us right now in The New Day:

Kofi Kingston, high flyer and consistent wrestler, can go with anyone in the ring. Is a fan favorite because of that. Cherished because of the athletic stunts he pulls off during pay per views, most notably Royal Rumble and Money in the Bank. Just look him up on YouTube with those PPVs. A victim of de-pushing right when he's hot over the last 5-8 years. NEVER has been in the World Title picture but has held every other title. Most notably was a war he had with A-Lister Randy Orton where he destroyed a stock car belonging to Orton. I know I wasn't the only black fan who thought it would lead to the upper echelon. Instead he was relegated to fighting for the IC and US title again and again.

Big E. Langston, the muscle, got his start with hot fan favorites Dolph Ziggler and AJ Lee showed also immediately a great presence on the mic. Then had a brief run as US Champion before he was offered up as a sacrifice to Rusev. Now what is he? A preacher who gets ragged on because he overly sweats.

Xavier Woods, intelligent and athletic, fiery young wrestler who had the idea of The New Day as a group angered at being discounted and overlooked. Now has to be a clapping, dancing, carnival pitchman for the "gospel" faction. Um, yeah. The group is entertaining as "good" bad guys but I wonder how they could be without the old tropes attached to them?

Stones and Glass Houses WWE. Stones and Glass Houses.

As far as the issue goes, we ALL have this within us and at a moment of weakness, it can come out strongly. Now can everyone use this mistake to improve themselves and the community around them? We'll see won't we?

JUSTICE LEAGUE

I liked Gods and Monsters but I can get where a lot of the detractors are coming from. The solicitations and advertising that Warner Bros and DC did made this sound like we were going to get a Crime Syndicate type world instead of a "darker" Justice League. If you listen to previous AfroNerd podcasts, I definitely fell into that trap as well but I thought the animation tale was well handled and an interesting start for an Elseworlds run at DC's Animated Universe.

MORE REVIEWS

Ant-Man Annual #1 by Nick Spencer and Brent Schoonover & Ramon Rosanas has the legacy of Hank Pym, his relationship with Scott Lang, AND a legacy advancement to the future all on tap. Just in time for enhancing a certain movie now in theaters.

Siege #1 by Kieron Gillen and Filipe Andrade is for all Hickman/Weaver SHIELD, S.W.O.R.D., Young Avengers, and oh yeah, if you been loving A-Force, you might want to flip through this one too. Oh. And poor Hank Pym. You just have to read this one. I not spilling....

We Are Robin #2 by Lee Bermejo and Jorge Corona picks up where the initial issue left off as the team finds itself surrounded underneath Gotham City with a crazed mob. I thought I had a handle on who was calling the shots but Lee Bermejo did it again on the last couple of pages and I all confused....

Divinity by Matt Kindt & Trevor Hairsine is essentially to the current Valiant Universe what Solar was to the 90's one. However, a Black Russian Male protagonist with seemingly infinite power isn't something you read about everyday. And talk about a memento type story timeline! I read through the trade 3 times and still don't think I got everything straight!

Marvel Zombies #2 by Simon Spurrier and Kev Walker is proof of one thing: Walker was born to draw zombies and horror. It is truly disgustingly gorgeous. And I can't say anything more about the plot because I really don't want to spoil any of the nuggets in this from MODOK to D.....ahhhh! Nearly gave it up!

Book of Death: The Fall of Bloodshot by Jeff Lemire and Doug Braithwaite gave me just what I was looking for in a detailed history AND a very important personal connection/interaction to a future Valiant hero. Now I wonder when the modern day hero will come across the event.

Cyborg #1 by David Walker and Ivan Reis by has been plugged and pushed by us at AfroNerd Radio since we heard about it from Mr. Walker. The first issue is a great setup for the series AND I love Sarah Charles being pushed to the fore as friend/love interest for Victor Stone (again). I am knocking on wood that the quality continues.

Fables #150/Volume 22 by Bill Willingham and Mark Buckingham & a host of others is the end of a fantastic run involving characters of myth, fable and folklore. Without its quality and popularity there would be no Once Upon a Time or Grimm. No Snow & the Huntsman, Maleficent, or Hansel & Gretel. This was fun, heartbreaking, and most of all made me yearn for it to continue. Thank you Bill and Mark for YEARS of quality!

And so ends this blog marathon.....Thanks are who were patient and read through all 3... You know I appreciate the debates, your patience, and time.

New Blog Dropping By Afronerd Radio's Daryll B.! Sports Geekery Included-Pt 1 & 2

A Whole Lot Going On!

Had an article 50% done before I passed out. Woke up about 90 minutes before I had to work so I decided to let article lie until I got home. So of course what happens? I have to tweak my sports part of this blog MAJORLY now!!!

GOLD CUP

Way to upset the great Futbol tidings of the nation US Men! What kind of way to start a match vs Jamaica was that? All the congrats in the world to the Reggae Boyz who fought hard from the opening whistle and deserved the 2-1 win. When will the Americans play a game strong from start to finish?

And I will be rooting hard for the Jamaicans vs Mexico because, wow, second straight game they were gifted a game. Quarters vs Costa Rica. Semis vs a 10 MAN Panama team. El Tri couldn't get their act together and had a questionable late penalty shot to bail them out. I have no words...

Even though my team of heritage, Trinidad and Tobago, were ousted in the quarters on penalties by Panama, I am still proud of the Soca Warriors. Great showing!

NASCAR

Kyle Busch REALLY trying to prove wins cover up all. He has won 3 out of the last 4 races and is up to 33rd in the standings. Consistent finishes in the Top 15-20 over the next 7 races will get him in the Chase for sure.

I know that Jeff Gordon is currently 10th in points and 13th in the Chase standings but this Sunday is the Brickyard and I will say that he is in a must win situation. He knows Indy better than most drivers and I think that this is his BEST chance for a Chase clinching victory...

I won't lie. I totally was getting into some more unknown drivers' chances for making the Chase but it obvious that each race's Top 15 will consist of the same drivers. Hard road to travel for smaller teams. Sorry Trevor Bayne...

MLB
I been loving this Summer of Yankees Renaissance that has been happening. Lord knows I didn't see this before the season started.

Great series that I hope will be a World Series down the line this week: Pittsburgh vs Kansas City. A lot of talented youth. A lot of fun bigtime plays...

I look away to concentrate on Futbol for a few weeks and BOOM! Albert Pujols gets hot and now the Angels are ahead of the Astros by 2 games. Maybe I was wrong about that coach/GM thing. Because since the GM left, Los Angeles has been red hot!

MLS
Now we have three teams in the race to land Didier Drogba as it was revealed this week that Montreal has entered negotiations with the striker...

Really did not see FC Dallas' youth gelling so well so early but they are on top of the West. We'll get a sense of how good they actually are over the next 5 games as they have Portland, LA, and Real Salt Lake visiting and have to go to Chicago and Vancouver.

As much moaning as I do over my RedBulls erratic play to start the Summer, we had a 4-2 win over Chelsea Wednesday Night!!!
Wait a sec.... Mind you this comes 28 hours after a heartbreaking US Open Cup loss on penalties in Philly. The senior team may give me ulcers but I am loving the talented kids on the Academy team. This win was because of their heart!

MISC

Can we all now call this Brady Investigation a joke now?

Justin Gatlin has learned nothing. If Usain Bolt is hurt, and with all your yapping, you BETTER win gold at the World Championships now.

Gotta admit, seeing that comedian making it rain all over Seph Blatter at a FIFA Conference/Meeting was hilarious...

Thank you ESPN for making the Pan American Games unwatchable. With all your channels, could you help us viewers out with what is being shown when? Sigh....

Sports now out of the way, I going to drop some book reviews now to be finished on Saturday's Blog along with a couple of albums....
First up!

Korvac Saga #2 by Dan Abnett with art by Otto Schmidt - My Marvel reviews this blog will run along a similar theme as "the lack of stars" will run through all. The Guardians and Avengers clashing, the transformation which blows the lid off of everything, and finally the (not so) shocking last page to long time Guardians of the Galaxy fans will be old hat while newer fans will be running to us asking what the $#^$# just happened?!?!?!?!? Abnett has the melodrama down Folks....

Guardians of Knowhere by Brian Michael Bendis with art by Mike Deodato
 - Ok. So if Battleworld has no stars, how can Knowhere exist? Well Bendis sidesteps this one as the team has to face Angela and dysfunction in their own ranks. In typical NuGuardians fashion, yeah this doesn't go too well and I am still asking myself question 1 here...

Captain Marvel and the Carol Corps #2 by Kelly Sue DeConnick & Kelly Thompson with art by David Lopez - Ask too many questions and a house built of cards will collapse on itself. That's what the Corps find out here as EVERYTHING they even have known has clashed in chaotic fashion. What is it about the most loyal that makes them your worst enemies when disillusioned?

Captain Britain and the Mighty Defenders #1 by Al Ewing with art by Alan Davis - Speaking of disillusioned, wow we find out the bitter price for questioning Lord Doom Thy God here as the heroes of Yinsen City get a reality check in the worst way imaginable. Folks who are fans of Captain America and the Mighty Avengers, just keep track of this book as Ewing works his magic and Davis gets to draw some of Britain's finest heroes (and a thinly veiled anti-hero to boot!). Also I want a Thor Gavel! I couldn't lift Thor's Hammer but I'd love a shot at that one!

The Book of Death #1 by Robert Venditti with art by Robert Gill and Doug Braithwaite
- Thank you Venditti for giving me nightmares and absolutely guaranteeing that I won't set foot in Ashlee, Wyoming. EVER! Now if that visual horror was in The Happening, I would have a better opinion of the movie. This follow up event to The Valiant already has me having to read the book with ALL the lights on, just in case any bugs want to sneak up on me.... DON'T ASK!!!

Like I said, this is part one for the week. Part Two: I get into the hip hop cover controversy; I do my shrinking review of Ant-Man; Album reviews on 12 Reasons To Die II by Ghostface and Adrian Younge and Two Weeks Notice by Mikal kHill and Tribe-One; Finally I have psuedo reviews/exclamations for more books including Cyborg, A-Force, Astro City, and Marvel Zombies.

I must go unconscious now. Thx for reading. Until Next Time Readers, I See You in the Stands, Fantasizing!

Part 2 Begins Now with....

LET'S GET LYRICAL!

Two Weeks Notice by Mikal kHill and Tribe-One - One of the things that anyone that truly knows me can tell you is that I listen to just about everything. If an artist does right by me, I'll continue to follow them until they stop making music. That being the case, Mikal and Tribe announced 3 weeks ago that they would be making an album AND briefly touring... all on, you got it, 2 weeks notice. Even for NerdCore artists, this is quite the undertaking but they TOTALLY pull this off. 10 tracks. First part, self-boasting; Second part, self loathing but around the third stage we get into a weird hip-hop-mythical vibe (a theme I'll touch on the next album also!) that makes the project pop! Simple yet catchy beats along with intricate lyrical wordplay makes this experiment a must listen for hip-hop heads.

Songs of Note: Nobody Knows, Party of Two, Ashes Will Never Sing Songs of Fire (yes that's the title! lol)

Album can be found at www.bandcamp.com/twoweeksnotice

(Also, TWO weeks guys? God. Nowadays, that's how long it takes me to clear my head to get a blog together! Great job!)

12 Reasons To Die II by Ghostface Killah and Adrian Younge - Unlike what some might think or say, Ghostface has lost nothing on his fastball. He can lyrically hold his own with most rappers. Curiously, his Tonk Starks persona has taken a quite dark/demonic turn with these 12 Reasons albums. Lies, betrayal, revenge, liven up DEMONIC BARGAINS and force me now to actually find a category for this album. I can't use HorrorCore...at least I don't think I can. I think that is still tied to metal... Anyway, those hip-hop fans who like their street raps extremely dark will love this album. I don't know offhand if this album will have a comic adaptation like the first but whoa. Just whoa. It feeds into the parts of you that crave the darkness and gives into primal emotion. Of course, he has frequent collaborator Raekwon join him here but drama lovers may be disappointed to know that RZA has a strong presence on the record also. Is it his best undertaking? Nope. But Ghostface is still quality folks and the Cain/Ghostface/Tony Starks legacy is a quite twisted one indeed.

Songs of Note: King of New York, Death's Invitation, Life's A Rebirth

Album can be found at iTunes, Amazon, and all the usual places....

Let's Get Serious!

By now everyone has heard about the Marvel Hip Hop Variant Covers and the uproar coming from various places. This indicative of three problems inherent with the Marvel Comic Machine at the moment:

1) This is another cash grab. Seriously who is going to buy ALL these variants within 1-2 months time? But obviously there is a market of fans for this. I love the images of the cherished albums but in that lies the second problem...

2) My thanks to Joseph Illidge and David Brothers who highlighted that while the covers are dope, they are largely all being done sans black artists and that led to a further examination (again) of the Marvel lineup of writers and artists for post Secret Wars and found it majorly lacking color. Sorry House of Ideas. No protection or excuses for this one, especially when DC has started to make strides again in that part of diversity AND we black fans can see other companies employing more and more minority talents.

3) Finally, I know Tom Breevort means well and I know that hip-hop's main buyers for YEARS was Suburban Middle Americans but you can't say essentially that hip-hop isn't a black thing. Not outloud. Not on Twitter. Not on TV. Not anywhere. You want to get the ire of black nerds up? Well.... Yeah job accomplished...

A well meaning tribute cash grab that leads to discussions that hopefully leads to the door opening for more opportunities at the House of Ideas....

SHRINKING REVIEW

I really liked Ant-Man even with the flaws. To me, this could be for the next phase what Iron Man was to the first. Paul Rudd is great as hard luck (ex-)criminal turned hero Scott Lang. Rudd captured Lang's torment between doing right by his daughter and always ending up doing the wrong thing well. He and Michael Douglas as Hank Pym had a great teacher/student dynamic. Evangeline Lilly was good as Hope Van Dyne. Michael Pena steals every scene he's in as Scott Lang's sidekick Luis. Rapid fire jokes, deadpan comedy, and his charm help to paint over some of the failings of the movie.

Most notably about this is I really wanted to see Janet Van Dyne aka The Wasp. I know that the movie alludes to Hope being her in the future but as a longtime Avengers fan, I really, REALLY wanted to see that. Also, if there was film on Henry in action as Ant-Man, and he's been operating in the suit for years, we only hearing about this now? Isn't the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the social media age? Stretching belief here a little....and I have to wonder also how a complete Edgar Wright version would have turned out. (Sorry Peyton Reed!)

However, this was a good movie and I definitely give it my support.

QUICK PLUGS!

Greg Pak. Asian-American Cowboy. Magic. Bonus Adam WarRock theme song!

Bag of Tricks Cat ft Mega Ran and Brandon Michael "Dream Girl"

Don't say I didn't point you to good music...lol

A COUPLE MORE COMIC REVIEWS/THOUGHTS (Argh! I have to wait another day on Cyborg!!!!)

A-Force #2 by Marguerite Bennett and G. Willow Wilson with art by Jorge Molina - Well this situation turned sour REALLY fast. Dissension in the ranks, a member gone, weird inter-spatial portals and oh yeah, a freaking Sentinel landing in the midst of the city!!! All in a day's work? As She-Hulk discovers, heavy is the head on which the crown rests....

Years of Future Past #3 by Marguerite Bennett with art by Mike Norton
 - A Bennett two-fer as she delves into another dystopian future featuring everyone's favorite mutants. Heck, the series won me over last issue with a kaiju sized Lockheed. Yes. I did actually say that X-Men Fans. And I will always love a kick-a$$ Storm in ANY era.

Astro City #25 by Kurt Busiek with art by Jesus Merino (interiors) and Alex Ross (cover)
 - Who knew a character named Hummingbird could have such a rich history. Yet be so detailed within a single issue. Gods, teen problems, legacy, and curses abound here folks!

OK part 2 done and I still have a part 3 to drop involving Cyborg, Gods and Monsters and a little trailer analysis...

Thx For Reading! Until Next Time, Keep Fantasizing!

A Partial Bit of Sports Geekery (aaaand Comic Book Nerdism), Courtesy of Daryll B.'s Latest Blog Droppings!

SDCC Begins and I think it Party Time in the USA!!!

Well you folks know me already and where I am going to start this blog so....

WOMENS WORLD CUP

Well I certainly didn't see that blitzkrieg coming and neither did any of the analysts. All the to the US Ladies for backing up what they have said they were going to do all tournament long. Redemption. Change the Script. She Believes. We thought it was all catch phrases until they put 4 goals on Japan before Japanese ever had time to regroup. 5-2 when it was all said and done. Take a bow ladies! You earned the cup in style.

Speaking of in style, all the props in the world to Carli Lloyd for one of the best championship performances I have seen in ANY sport. A hat trick in under 20 minutes... in Futbol is quite an accomplishment. It is unthinkable for that to happen in a Cup Final. And a record audience saw exactly that.

To Americans Rampone, Wambach and Boxx and the Japanese wunderkind Sawa, who'll probably never play in another World Cup match again. THANK YOU. It was a pleasure to see you ladies play hard and define athleticism and national pride over the last 16-20 years. Good Luck with whatever life has planned for you next.

NASCAR

Well it took a long time with that rain delay but congrats to Dale Earnhardt JR. on winning at Daytona Early Monday Morning. Yep you read that right as the race didn't actually end until around 3am.

Unfortunately, not many will remember this race for that because on the final lap, Austin Dillon got tapped and went airborne right into the catch fence. Car disintegrated. Demolition derby followed but Dillon walked away unscathed.

Matter of fact, a lot of fan favorite drivers had their rides totaled during the race and there are more than a few that might have seen their Chase hopes crushed. Kyle Busch can't catch a break... and neither can Danica Patrick...

NBA

All the props in the world to David West for eschewing the money and joining the Spurs for that chance at a ring. I have heard analysts rip him for the decision but he still has time to make up money. West is chasing that ring Baby!

Should I stay or should I go? If I go there will be trouble...and if I stay it will be doubled. NBA Fans let me know...Should I stay or should I go? - DeAndre Jordan. I needed someone with a webcam around Mark Cuban when he heard news of Jordan's backtracking...

Everyone focusing on Wade, LeBron, and Paul on the banana boat. I still was focusing on what a hottie Gabrielle Union still is....

MLB

Losing Alex Gordon for 8 weeks may be a giant pothole for the Royals to get through...

Bigger Disappointment this season: Seattle or San Diego?

I dunno what the second half of the season entails but I know I will be keeping an eye on the Indians and Reds to start making a run or deal half their teams...

WIMBLEDON

Nick Kyrgios is definitely a personality on the court but intentionally giving away points? Even in frustration, that'll make fans, players. and commentators mad at you in a hurry for reducing the game into joke fodder....

Serena vs Venus....Much more interesting than Serena vs Maria Sharapova. God Maria got her booty kicked! Venus is on the downside and had much more fight than Sharapova...

Can Roger Federer do this again? He's holding up his end while a lot of the top 16 have fallen by the wayside...

MISC

We can try to spin it all we want. UFC can spin it all they want. Mendes replacing Jose Aldo this Saturday vs Conor McGregor is a disappointment. I was hyped to see McGregor vs Aldo.

Gold Cup begins and let's see what the USA got....and I'll be rooting for Trinidad and Tobago to get to the knockout phase....
Seriously Jason Pierre-Paul, did you do any thinking at all????

SPORTS SWITCH OFF AFRONERD SWITCH ON

Well, last week I hit you with Marvel, DC, and Image news.... Since San Diego Comic-Con begun Thursday, let's see other news around the Comics World...

-Dark Horse saw what Image Comics did and has shot back with getting Paul Tobin, Joelle Jones, Rafael Albuquerque, Gene Ha, and Cullen Bunn to open up comic con. Ha's Mae project is what I am looking forward to because it sounds like Twin Peaks meets Rachel Rising.

-Wesley Snipes and Marvel talking? Let the wild Blade speculation BEGIN!

-Grant Morrison just put Graphic India on the Comics Map just by association. And bonus news, he's taking over Heavy Metal Magazine. Get ready for a new level of crazy imagination folks!

- I don't know what it says about the cinematic Justice League when Jada Pinkett Smith says she wants to play Vixen...in SUICIDE SQUAD 2...! I think a lot of old school DC Fans just went "What The...?"

-I'm getting more Pacific Rim comics this Fall!!!! *Victory Dance!"

-IDW. CAPCOM. Street Fighter/GI Joe crossover. 2016. Now you know and knowing is HADOUKEN!!!!! PLUS IDW seeing what Marvel has done with the Star Wars franchise is ramping up its Star Trek roster including a Starfleet Academy book. But just talking about this leads me into this week's books starting with:

Star Trek/Green Lantern #1: The Enterprise 2.0 (Yes it is the retooled universe) stumbles across a dead world then a dead character surrounded by different colored rings. Cue an ambush by a familiar foe and the rings go nuts and here...we...go... Good setup for a first issue, let me see what chaos ensues....

Bloodshot Reborn #4: Bloodshot takes a step too far here...and unfortunately the creative staff does also by the very last word blurb. I didn't need to know that much. I wanted to be surprised. But let's see what Jeff Lemire got planned. He doesn't make mistakes...unless it furthers an agenda OR a diabolical plan!

Runaways #2Secret Wars 2099 #3, and Spider-Verse #3 just happened. Nothing wowed me but I am expecting a payoff to some of the setups in these issues. Although I have to say as a fan of the recent SpideyVerse storyline, I wondered how the Web was going to be worked in...

Earth 2 Society #2: Pretty much how I figured this was going to go already but also explained a deus ex machina that keeps Kara and Val-Zod in check. A PRETTY BIG deus ex machina.....

Master of Kung Fu #3: Making the most of these mashed up Marvel Universes and still it is fun as all hell. Needs more Black Panther though.... Yes that was a personal bias but it doesn't keep me from loving the heck out of this book!

Age of Apocalypse #1: Feels like Fabian Nicienza never left this universe and the introduction of Doc Nemesis is inspired. Now I don't know about Cypher being our eyes in this universe but again this is a wait and see....

I told you folks to keep Squadron Sinister on your radar and #2 just upped the stakes with no less than 5 familiar universes being given time to shine. Death of a Thor. Backstabbing. And plans upon plans upon domination. All the while, Nighthawk got a plan...

Spidey's Renew Your Vows #2 would have won this week in my eyes just for the introduction of Power Pack AND using the Parker ingenuity to help keep the family's life normal (you know that darn Parker Luck though!) if not for that dang Mark Waid!!!

Archie #1: "Lipstick Incident" aside, this was almost a seamless updating of the Archie mythos into today's sensibilities. Mark Waid and Fiona Staples absolutely nail the feel and appeal of the characters of Riverdale and it is almost a consensus that Jughead has ALREADY stolen the book from the titular character. And we have a bunch more characters just waiting to be introduced including the third part of the triangle, a diner owner, the football star, etc. This is going to be a gift that keeps giving...

Now for the book that I really like and it seems I am the only one on the island, Strange Fruit #1. I thought Mark Waid and artist JG Jones handled the setup well along with the complicated 1920's nuances of the town of Chatterlee, Mississippi well. Anyone that knows history, knows what is going down during this time, with the Jim Crow laws and Ku Klux Klan in full effect. The tricky thing for me here before reading this was going to be how Waid was going to introduce the Superman Mythos into this melting pot and he does it towards the end of issue 1. Jones has his best art rendering in years and everything feels vibrant here. Great setup now let's see them stick the landing...

For an eloquent, opposing opinion on Strange Fruit #1, check out

http://womenwriteaboutcomics.com/2015/07/08/the-white-privilege-white-audacity-and-white-priorities-of-strange-fruit-1/

for J.A. Micheline's analysis. I really can't fight any of the solid points made about Strange Fruit except that I trust Mark Waid as a writer and no one knows the Superman Mythos like he does. We'll see if he can avoid the stereotype/trope potholes that race brings with is. Let me rephrase: I HOPE HE CAN...lol

Brain Cooked. Fun had. And I still have to pick up Civil War #1, Spider Island #1, and Star Wars Lando #1 while watching Wimbledon and Gold Cup action! *SIGH* This is my life....

Thanks For Reading! Until Next Time, I'll See You in the Stands, Fantasizing!
