The Mid Week in Review (MWIR) Airing WED at 8pm ET Now @BTalk 100; Topix: Comic Con @Home Analyses Continued; Meg Thee Stallion; Tyson vs Jones; Tom King vs Jae Lee & More!

E nle o ("hello in Yoruba language), to our staunch Afronerd Radio listeners.  Welcome to another fact finding mission dubbed The Mid Week in Review-airing this Wednesday at 8pm, courtesy of BTalk 100.  Join your "ever lovin" AFROnerdist broadcasters as they unravel the following (mid) weekly mysteries:  we continue to decipher more pop culture blerdy/nerdy revelations coming out of this past weekend's first virtual SDCC Comic Con @Home event spurred on by current coronavirus circumstances; and as expected, it appears that "Hollywood East" dba NYC, is looking to create a virtual NY Comic Con too; picking up where we left off, there were still other topics we failed to address via last Sunday's Grindhouse show; an Atlantablackstar.com piece reports that investors are subsidizing African startups just not the ones created or helmed by black folk; Arkansas Senator, Tom Cotton has caused quite a stir with his remarks about US slavery being a "necessary evil":

thoughts about the shooting of rap artist, Megan Thee Stallion and how it really unpacks the notion of larger karmic issues in current corporate black pop music; more musings about the exhibition fight scheduled between retired boxing giants Mike Tyson and Roy Jones, Jr.; just what was behind the budding "comicsgate" controversy involving graphic novelist, Tom King (Rorschach) and illustrator, Jae Lee; yet another new comic hits the speculators market and it's Catwoman #23 (guess who the new character reveal is this time);

And lastly, maybe it was kismet that as soon as Dburt was revisiting a '17 Vulture article entitled, "Why Can't Black Witches Get Some Respect in Popular Culture?", legendary actress, Angela Bassett lowkey pitched a prequel for her portrayal of famed New Orleans priestess, Marie Laveau in American Horror Story via twitter.  Call in LIVE at 508-645-0100.

"Not long ago, I wondered if I'd lost my soul, even my identity, by becoming a machine-and maybe even a monster. But I wasn't a monster.  I was who I'd always been. And my soul is still intact.  In fact, now my soul needed the machine to embark on its journey to the next evolutionary step for humankind. New Broadcast Alert! The Grindhouse Airs This Sunday @6pm; Topics- SDCC Virtual Panels; AG Barr vs Marvel; Michael B. Jordan's #ChangeHollywood; Helstrom Trailer

Howdy, AFROnerdists!  Check out the latest Grindhouse installment of Afronerd Radio "steam engine" via our new and different platform, BTalk 100.  Join your friendly (coronavirus free) neighborhood broadcasters as they discuss the following issues: well the Comic Con@Home SDCC panels are in full swing and we have our first impressions:

President Trump's "top cop," Attorney General, William Barr has quite a bit of criticism for Hollywood studios who are continuing to do business with China in spite of their notorious human rights violations and censorship guidelines (oh and he name drops Marvel for good measure); popular actor, Michael B Jordan (Black Panther, Creed) launches a new diversity initiative adroitly entitled, #ChangeHollywood ;  Marvel/Hulu's Helstrom trailer just hit the cyberwebs:

It appears that the once popular and necessary gaming channel, G4 is marking its return in 2021;  if time permits, hopefully we'll be able to address some of the topics we failed to highlight during this past Wednesday's Mid Week show;  2020 continues to be unrelenting with more iconic deaths-noted actor, John Saxon (Nightmare on Elm Street, Enter the Dragon), legendary NYC TV host, Regis Philbin and Fleetwood Mac founder/blues guitarist, Peter Green;  Justice League actor, Ray Fisher appears to be doubling down on his recent accusations of abusive/unprofessional behavior concerning filmmaker, Joss Whedon; Dburt is actually invested in a Verzuz battle between hip hop gods, Rakim and Big Daddy Kane (and then there's that Usher vs Chris Brown talk as well); And lastly, our thoughts about the more "fleshed out" Lovecraft Country trailer.

"I don't believe it--even here--forty thousand kilometers from Earth---and the first thing I see is a giant alien white man with an attitude"-Adam Brashear aka Blue Marvel

Oh...and maybe we can squeeze in our impressions of Beyonce's controversial Black is King trailer....there's always some controversy, allegedly.

Your consistent AFROnerdist broadcasting team will be dissecting the following (mid) week's pertinent issues:  a recent TheRoot.com piece reports that The National Museum of African American History and Culture removed a "Whiteness" chart after receiving a barrage of complaints deemed to be "conservative" (uh....sure); a Variety article waxes about the death of cable TV as we currently know it; attempt some clean up with topics missed during last Sunday's Grindhouse show: more Kanye West mental duress moments hit the media during his "presidential" run;  Jezebel revisits the widely panned Prince movie classic, Under The Cherry Moon:

In the war over which streaming service remains supreme, is Quibi on to something with their latest trailers (Don't Look Deeper, The Stranger, Dummy, Most Dangerous Game)? ;  is the long delayed and last vestige of the FOX/Marvel regime, New Mutants film ever going to be released or is the Disney plus platform an inevitability? so it appears that the Marvel/Hulu Helstrom project is still at play; more on DC Universe/CW Stargirl's latest story line and early S2 renewal; And lastly, our thoughts on JD Witherspoon not getting the part to voice his late father, John Witherspoon's beloved "Grandad" character from the Boondocks.  Call in live at 508-645-0100.

'Nuff said.  Call LIVE at 508-645-0100.

Listen to The Mid Week in Review (MWIR) Airing This Wednesday at 8pm-Issues: Black Animators Speak Out; Trek Animated; Giancarlo Wants a Marvel Deal & More

In the words of arguably one of the world's greatest entertainers, James Brown....let's "get up, get into it and get involved!"   Check out the latest episode of Afronerd Radio's Mid Week in Review airing this Wednesday at 8pm eastern.  Your friendly neighborhood AFROnerdists will be unpacking about the following topics:  Hat tip to stalwart Afronerd Radio supporter for tweeting about a recent LA Times piece highlighting the trials and tribulations of black animators in the aftermath of the George Floyd protests; just after we spoke about the Simone Biles Vogue cover fiasco, it appears that actress, Viola Davis Vanity Fair cover struck the correct chord; why did it have to be him?  controversial filmmaker, Lee Daniels is purportedly rebooting the fondly remembered Wonder Years ABC TV show with a black cast; thoughts about the release of CBS All Access trailer for an upcoming Star Trek animated series entitled, Star Trek: Lower Decks which hit the cyberwebs a few days ago;  in a tweet discussing legendary actor, Giancarlo Esposito's desire to be cast in a Marvel project, somehow Dburt was accused of "gatekeeping" (white) characters....what does that mean?;  funny how unresolved story twists can still linger in viewers minds.  Case in point-noted director, Cheo Hodari Coker recently gave further insight into the killing off of the Cottonmouth character (masterfully portrayed by Mahershala Ali) in season 1 of Netflix' Luke Cage:

And in even more animated news, just what is the Disney plus Star Wars animated project, Bad Batch?;  we're going to tidy up the place by addressing some of the topics left on th etable from Sunday's Grindhouse show; Dburt revisits the very progressive (for its time) early aughts Alan Moore penned pulp comic, Tom Strong (and why not a streaming series in the vein of Buck Rogers); Dburt is absolutely elated about the return of S2 of TNT's Alienist: Angel of Darkness while simultaneously angry about the cancellation of the Lincoln Rhyme: Hunt for the Bone Collector series; And lastly, our thoughts about a Huffpost article exposing leadership flaws and mistreatment of employees at the black owned media imprint, OkayMedia. Call LIVE at 508-645-0100.

Hundalasiliah!....to our loyal Afronerd Radio "steam engine" listenership.  Welcome to the latest installment of The Grindhouse airing this Sunday at 6pm eastern.  Joining us this evening is Afronerd Radio's longtime favorite and erstwhile "west coast" (now southeastern) correspondent, Claire Lanay!!  So choose your favorite libation while you listen to your favorite blerd broadcast wax about the following topics:  word has it that the forthcoming HBO Max streaming service will be adding a TV spinoff based in the same universe as director, Matt Reeves' The Batman; and is the current zeitgeist allowing for another cop show in the aftermath of George Floyd protests and BLM prominence?; noted Olympic gymnast, Simone Biles causes a bit of a stir with her recent Vogue coverMovieweb.com highlights the contributions of theoretical physicist, Dr. Clifford Johnson not only for his tutelage relating to real world scientific theory as applied to the MCU but also pertaining to his thoughts on how the Fantastic Four can be rebooted via The Black Panther; just what is  Amazon's Tales from the Loop series and why is it so mind-bending?; legendary actor, Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad, Mandalorian) makes an appearance in the trailer for the upcoming VG, Far Cry 6:

Why is Dburt just discovering Hero: Academia and its in season 4, already? maybe we'll pontificate on why we shouldn't discuss the Will and Jada live action soap opera costarring alleged R & B singer, August Alsina; with Keanu Reeves career rebound, is his version of Constantine what DC fans really want? (did Sting age out?); more on problematic Hollywood iconography, statues and monuments being put through the social justice strainer in the age of wokeness;  and lastly, TheMarySue.com ponders about LGBTQ representation in Disney's The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.  Call LIVE at 508-645-0100.

Oh and what about those virtual comic cons?  Expectations for SDCC in two weeks.

The Mid Week in Review Airs This Wed @BTalk100: More on Capt. Kirk's Passing; Janelle Monae vs (Male) Hip Hop; Kaepernick & Disney+ More

Hey folks....honestly, the Afronerd Radio family is going to be in mourning indefinitely since we discovered that the soul of our blerd media enterprise, Kirk "The Captain" Goodall passed away last week.  And for listeners that were unable to hear this past Sunday's memorial broadcast, it will be available in podcast form shortly.  If there's one thing that Captain Kirk taught our crew, it's to forge forward in spite of adversity and honor the original mission-the promulgation of the other black experience (blerd culture, urb-alt music, science/tech, commerce and black intellect as product). So let's try to do exactly that.....get into a groove and discuss the matters of the day via our new home BTalk 100.

Check out the latest installment of the Mid Week in Review via the  Afronerd Radio steam engine airing this Wednesday at 8pm eastern.  The topics on your summertime barbecue grill are:  more thoughts, prayers and observations concerning the untimely passing of our brother (and yours!), Captain Kirk; actress/singer, Janelle Monae had some interesting things to say about the longstanding misogyny in hip hop; and right on time after Monae's remarks, there that business with minstrels, 50 Cent and Lil Wayne; although it's still murky if activist and athlete, Colin Kaepernick will ever play in the NFL, it's more apparent that other corporations (like Disney) are open to business with him;  and as expected quite a few NFL fans are non-committal toward the league for promising to play "Lift Every Voice and Sing" a.k.a. the Black national anthem before a preseason games;  more thoughts about the erasure of white, racist and/or Confederate monuments, statutes and honors and what happens if black effigies are given that same work? (oops.....like Frederick Douglass); The Comics Beat highlights the contribution of noted Barnes & Noble graphic novel buyer, Jim Killen who was recently furloughed from the company after 20 years of service in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic; Harry Potter author, J.K. Rowling signs an open letter (along with 150 other notables) critiquing cancel culture; And lastly, what can we expect from proposed upcoming virtual comic conventions (i.e. SDCC, Marvel and Dragon-Con).  Call in LIVE at 508-645-0100.

A Special Afronerd Radio Broadcast! In Memoriam (The Captain) Kirk Goodall-This Sunday at 6pm ET-Your Thoughts, Prayers, Stories; LIVE Call#-508-645-0100

Wow.  Greetings to our loyal listenership and to our more recent Afronerd Radio supporters.  We are having a very special Sunday Grindhouse broadcast (6pm eastern) where we are honoring the life and times of fellow host and show architect, Kirk Goodall who passed last Sunday after succumbing to a brief illness. Kirk started with the Afronerd Radio "steam engine" almost a decade ago and frankly, he was an integral component (the "soul") of the show's development, marketing strategy and promotion of black nerd culture/intellect as a distinct "product."  Kirk was an athletic, pensive and quick witted individual who really was the embodiment of a "superhuman" coming off the pages of our beloved comics.  Please join us as we play his first appearance on Afronerd Radio (9.5.2010), additional clips and accept calls from family, friends, fans and Afronerd past/present team members.

Our Call in number is 508-645-0100.  We lost a real class act, folks!  Rest in peace and power, Captain.
