2020 Can't Be Over Any Sooner, Huh? Grindhouse @BTalk 100-SUN, 6pm; Chadwick Boseman Passes; Ubisoft Apologizes; New Mutants' Whitewashing; New Supes Animated & More

Wow. 2020 is going to go down in the history books for immeasurable losses beyond the current COVID-19 pandemic.  As rough as this year has been for our team, and of course our listeners, we assure you that our platform will continue to persevere.  Check out our latest installment of Afronerd Radio's Grindhouse airing this Sunday at 6pm, courtesy of BTalk100.  The topics to be discussed:  the untimely passing of an icon, actor Chadwick Boseman (42, Get on Up) of Marvel's Black Panther fame succumbs to colon cancer at the age of 43; discussing his rise and legacy and regrettably prospects for the Panther franchise here on out; the long awaited release of the Marvel/Fox film, New Mutants appears not be without controversy-the superhero team's co-creator, Bob McLeod has some pretty interesting thoughts about the movie's whitewashing elements; oh and just what is the (limited) audience saying about New Mutants anyway?; impression of S5 of Luther at its new(er) Netflix' platform (versus FOX); ok....we really have to talk about NBC's Peacock and their black themed programming.  Dburt glanced and it seems like there's a lot going on...just sayin'; what's the deal with these failry serious science fiction TV series being translated as comedic cartoons?  First it was Star Trek: Lower Decks and now the X-files?;  our thoughts about the expansion of the Sherlock Holmes universe via Netflix' Enola Holmes starring Millie Bobby Brown and Henry Cavill:

Why isn't this bigger news? 19 families purchased 90 acres of land in Georgia to create a city safe for black people;  are we getting closer to nanobots or more specifically "microbots" that could one day be injected into the human body?;  did last week's virtual Republican Convention really narrow Biden's lead against President Trump to 6 percentage points?; Gamesradar.com lends focus to an upcoming Flash family story line entitled Dark Nights: Speed Metal#1;  our impressions of the new DC Animated release of Superman: Man of Tomorrow; And lastly, Dburt trips over another interesting time travel comic entitled The Man Who F#$%ed Up Time by John Layman and Kyle Mostert.  Call in LIVE at 508-645-0100!

"In my culture, death is not the end.  It's more of a stepping off point.  You reach out with both hands and Bast and Sekhmet, they lead you into a green veld where you can run forever."-T'Challa (Black Panther as portrayed by the late Chadwick Boseman)

The Mid Week Review Airs This WED, 8pm EST @BTalk 100; Topics: Hot 97's "Paddy Duke"; More DC Fandome Talk; All Rise; Nichelle Nichols

Check out the latest installment of Afronerd Radio's Mid Week in Review (MWIR) broadcast this Wednesday at 8pm and airing thanks to the good folks at BTalk 100.  The topics to be placed under our microscope this (mid) week are: longtime Hot 97 NY radio staffer, Paddy Duke was fired after the station discovered that he was one of a mob of eight men charged in the infamous 1989 racial killing of Yusef Hawkins; tying up some loose ends from our last Grindhouse discussion (i.e. attempts at racist/sexist story lines on the set of CBS' All Rise TV show; acting legend, Nichelle Nichols latest struggles) including last weekend's DC Fandome pop culture event;

Ok....where are we now, since we've seen episode 2 of HBO's supernatural TV series, Lovecraft Country?;  British soul artist, Van Morrison appears NOT to care about covid-19 and science but he does care about filling concert seats (sigh);  another Peacock streaming show, Noughts + Crosses may be of interest, expanding on the theme of role reversal between races and cultures (what if Africa colonized Europe?)

Thoughts about Netflix' apology for inappropriate artwork for the French youth dramatic film, Cuties (titled Mignonnes in France); thoughts about several Polygon.com pieces-the upcoming Three Jokers comic and what it could mean to expanding the mythology of Batman's most notable nemesis and how does the Yakuza video franchise address toxic masculinity). And lastly, hat tip to stalwart listener, John Hutton for tweeting this harrowing tale of loss of generational wealth and the devaluation of blackness as exhibited in a Florida real estate appraisal (further explored in a recent NY Times piece):

Call in LIVE at 508-645-0100!

The Grindhouse Airs This SUN @BTalk 100, 6pm EST-Topix? DC Fandome; Black Batman? Troubles at CBS' All Rise; Nichelle Nichols; Music Bundling & More; Call Live #508-645-0100

Just like James Bond's martini, this week's Afronerd Radio Grindhouse topics will be simple-"shaken, not stirred."  Welcome to our umpteenth episode-airing this Sunday at 6pm eastern, courtesy of BTalk 100.  Join your eveready hosts as they wax about the following topics:  well the first part of DC's answer to SDCC @Home commenced with a bang at their own website-DCfandome.com and we will discuss the revelations, trailers, star power etc (a lot of Batman, eh Daryll?);

it appears that music bundling is the new payola in an ever dying music business model;  German scientists conduct a concert attendance experiment under COVID-19 conditions; legendary actress and perhaps the "Goddess" of afrofuturism, Nichelle Nichols maybe a victim of elder abuse (in much the same way the late Stan Lee had pilferers);  oh and DC head honcho, Jim Lee confirmed that there really will be a black Batman in '21, thanks to 12 Years a Slave scribe, John Ridley;  thoughts about yet another streaming service, NBC's Peacock platform via this trailer for the BBC's Anthony (based on a real life racially motivated killing in the UK)-

 Actress, Jasika Nicole (The Good Doctor) wasn't too fond of her character's name being made fun of during the entire five seasons;  did friend of the show, Sergio Mims mention this?  well we'll talk about it because it's necessary and noteworthy-the Philadelphia Orchestra announced Nicole Jordan as its principal librarian (another black first....but still): CBS All Rise writers allege there was a neverending battle to keep sexist and racist story lines from being explored on the show due to a clueless white Canadian showrunner;  and lastly, as an aside to the DC Fandome, Shazam 2 (tentatively called Fury of the Gods) panel...I really do hope, Sinbad makes an appearance in the sequel!  Call in LIVE at 508-645-0100.

The Afronerd Radio Steam Engine! Now @BTalk 100, This WED, 8pm; Issues: Cleaning Topix from The Grindhouse; Lovecraft Country Review; Adult Swim Actor Fired; No Morpheus for Matrix 4? Green Hornet Animated? & More

It's the Mid Week in Review (MWIR), people!  Check us out this Wednesday 8pm eastern via our new home at, BTalk 100.  Join your favorite (only?) AFROnerdist broadcasters as they wax about the following (mid) weekly issues: we absolutely must address some of the subjects we failed to get to due to time constraints during this past Sunday's Grindhouse show;  another day and another undercover racist loses a gig by not being able to control their inner thoughts (is Allison of the Umbrella Academy controlling folks?) this time it was the loss of a voice over role from Adult Swim's Squidbillies show; several media outlets are reporting that legendary veteran actor, Laurence Fishburne (School Daze, John Wick) has not been asked to reprise his role as Morpheus in the highly anticipated matrix reboot; UPROXX reports that the once dormant Mulan boycott controversy has been revised as the Disney plus premiere approaches; we give our impression of the pilot episode of HBO's Lovecraft Country:

Dburt is cautiously excited about filmmaker, Kevin Smith disclosing that he has recently drafted a 20 page outline for season one of a proposed Green Hornet animated project;  and so the incredulous nonsense begins......it seems that starting this October, Oculus VR users must log on to their Facebook accounts to use their devices (Big Brother is alive and well); And lastly with all of DC troubles, what does the umpteenth announcement of the return of Milestone Media even mean....even if takes place at the upcoming DC Fandome event?

"As many of you have already witnessed, I am gifted with certain Special Abilities.  I have possessed these gifts for many years, but for the most part have refrained from using them.  No More. Today I set a challenge for myself, a challenge to be of service to humanity.  I will do this by being a living example of what's possible.  I intend to hold myself to a very high standard.  I ask no less of you.  I challenge you to challenge yourselves.  You are all gifted with special abilities.  Strive to live up to your potential, as I will to live up to mine.  I can fly--so can you!"-Augustus Freeman (Icon)

Hey! It's A New Grindhouse Show Airing @BTalk 100 This Sunday at 6pm; The Topix? Umbrella Academy's Justin H. Min; Netflix' Project Power; More on DC's Woes; Sen. Harris Called "Jemima" & More!

And so it begins....AGAIN!  Check out the latest episode of Afronerd Radio's Grindhouse-airing every Sunday at 6pm eastern.  Join your friendly neighborhood broadcasters, Dburt and Claire Lanay as they bring their own unique brand of pop culture analyses while discussing the following topics:  with grand expectations for S3 of Netflix' popular Umbrella Academy, actor Justin H. Min's subdued portrayal of the Ben Hargreeves character appears to have paid off for the long haul for the next installment;  uh oh...here we go-the highly anticipated Avatar: The Last Airbender live-action reboot appears to have hit a snag with the exit of the original creators, Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko from the Netflix project; leave it to Marge Simpson to get into the political fray in defense of Sen. Kamala Harris:

And speaking of Sen. Harris, never let it be said that racism wanes, especially not during this very polarized zeitgeist! The mayor of Luray, Va recently apologized for likening the VP hopeful to "Aunt Jemima,"; the Washington Post even had an article giving historical context to the mayor's racist language and the small town he presides over;  just when I thought that actor/comedian, Jamie Foxx was no longer attached to the Spawn reboot project (I stand corrected), it seems that he is still sticking to a "capes" theme via the new Netflix release, Project Power, co-starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt:

Did we forget to mention the return of the G4 TV gaming network?;  more on Disney's animated Owl House and its controversial (re: appropriateness for a children's series) and groundbreaking inclusion of a bisexual lead character;  there's an "entanglement" joke somewhere.....reports are surfacing that Will Smith's production company, Westbrook, Inc had 10 staffers testing positive for COVID-19; and now President Trump is causing national agita regarding the efficacy of USPS and mail-in ballot voting (it just never stops);  so Dburt's dad while perusing a 1958 Ebony Magazine article, recognized a longtime customer who was a famed NASA engineer (unbeknownst to the Oracle); as predicted by our own Uncanny Daryll B., DC Comics publisher, Jim Lee formally addresses the shrinking of his monthly comics line;  wow....we may have to get director, Justin Simien (Dear White People) back on the show to talk up his new satirical horror comedy film, Bad Hair scheduled for Halloween season release on Hulu:

And lastly, with the way social media already "grades" or monitors human behavior (sort of), how long will it take before the U.S. adopts a social credit system similar to China?  Call in LIVE at 508-645-0100.

"I am no hero. Merely a man who has seen and done and endured what can never be forgotten or forgiven"-Max Eisenhardt (Magneto)

New Internet Radio Broadcast Alert! The Mid Week Review @BTalk 100-This WED, 8pm ET; Issues: DC Layoffs; Sen. Harris as Biden's VP; Grindhouse Leftovers; NY Comic-Con Canceled (As if) & More

What's shakin,' AFROnerdists!  A new Afronerd Radio Mid Week in Review (MWIR) show is upon us-airing this Wednesday at 8pm eastern and engineered via our new platform, BTalk 100.   The topics to be dissected this (mid) week are:  even post COVID-19, can affect a company that creates superheroes, apparently-big layoffs are in the works at DC Universe and DC Comics;  Dburt's favorite theater chain, the Alamo Drafthouse might have an exclusive workaround for showing films during a pandemic...private party showings; oh, and in political news, Democratic presidential hopeful, Joe Biden has chosen Sen. Kamala Harris as his running mate (now if we can count on mail-in voting);  we always have leftovers in our metaphysical fridge from last Sunday's Grindhouse episode;

Rollingstone.com has two interesting articles centered around not only the history of racism toward black artists in the record industry but also recent creation of the Black Music Action Coalition (BMAC) as a means to combat the aforementioned systemic biases;  who honestly didn't think that New York Comic Con wasn't going to be cancelled? Well, the formally made the announcement along with the reveal that, just like last month's SDCC @Home, NYC will have their version of online panels; and just for the sake of venting....why are people insistent upon having "underground" parties or non-socially distant raves as the national death toll continues to rise from the coronavirus?

It looks like that YoutTube's Fresh Prince of Bel-Air "dramatic" reimagining has paid off with an announcement of a full blown series reboot in the works;  The Wall Street Journal reports on yet another impressive A.I. development proposing software that more closely mimics actual language processingnews on the Rogue-One prequel via Disney plus; And lastly, thoughts about the band getting back together-a la the original CSI (Vegas) series returning.  Call in LIVE at 508-645-0100.

Latveria is European, Mr. Cage--I have no black subjects, and--sad to say--no one ever emigrates to my land.  Thus, in order to pursue them unobtrusively--for I am not welcome in the United States--I needed a black, and I need to hire him.  Enter, Luke Cage.-Dr. Victor Von Doom

The Grindhouse Heard ONLY @BTALK 100-This Week: Filmmaker, Hilton Ruiz Stops By!; Phil Collins Teaching The Youth?; X-Rated Trolls?; Zoe Kravitz on Hulu's "Diversity"; Biden on Black Diversity, too & More!

What better place to get back to the genre grind than a show called The Grindhouse? Listen to the latest installment of Afronerd Radio's Grindhouse airing this Sunday at 6pm eastern, courtesy of BTalk 100.  Join your always eager AFROnerdist hosts as they pontificate on the following issues: friend of the show/fellow comrade of the late Capt. Kirk and filmmaker, Hilton Ruiz (Zombie with a Shotgun6666) stops by not only to discuss his successful Zombie franchise but also to clue us in on upcoming projects; it appears that legendary musician, Phil Collins still has cred with younger fans as their appreciation for his classic jam, In the Air Tonight goes viral via YouTube:

And in disturbing news (but this is 2020),  a discerning parent discovers that a weird second button on a popular Hasbro Trolls doll might signal a gateway to promoting child abuse-thankfully the toy is being removed amid parental complaints; actress/musician, Zoe Kravitz in response to the cancellation of her Hulu series, High Fidelity (her mom, Lisa Bonet starred in the film version) made some interesting remarks about the lack of diversity on the selfsame streaming platform; and in even more "diversity" news, Democratic presidential presumptive nominee (and gaffe master), Joe Biden had some musings about Black vs Brown diversity in culture and politics:

We give our impressions of the first episode of CBS All-Access' new animated series, Star Trek: The Lower Decks; California Congressman, James P. Bradley raised the ire of some Cardi B/Meg Thee Stallion fans on Twitter for his rather blistering (and accurate) critique of their latest collaborative video, WAP; more news about Disney plus continuing the 90's animated X-Men series with new episodes and starting thematically from the final episode; a new GamesRadar.com piece highlights an upcoming Boom comic, Seven Secrets which is purportedly the best selling creator owned debut in its entire 15 year publication history; the latest iteration of Doctor Strange gets cancelled (right after I started reading the character after years of non interest.....sigh) and lastly, just a proliferation of Star Trek news (the future of the film franchise, another animated series this time for Nickelodeon and actor, Simon Pegg's thought about Star Trek TV).  Call in LIVE at 508-645-0100.

"It must be why human families everywhere gather together for meals--so they cam laugh and love and learn as each other's lives unfold and intersect....It is elemental to them.  It is the foundation of their future.  It is....fantastic."-Uatu (The Watcher)

It's Wednesday & It's Mid Week in Review (MWIR) Time! Airing 8pm ET; The Topics? Comic Creator, Dedren Snead's New Project; Continuing Sunday's Convo; More Umbrella Academy; Children in Handcuffs in CO + More!

Here we go! Like a Nike ad, let's just do it!  Welcome to a new and "freshly baked" installment from the Afronerd Radio engine, better known as Wednesday's Mid Week in Review, airing 8pm eastern on your friendly neighborhood BTalk 100 platform.  Join your favorite (or is that only) AFROnerdist broadcasters as they wax about the following (mid) weekly topics:  friend of the show (and convention circuit....if we have those again..sigh) and noted animator/graphic novelist, Dedren Snead (Sorghum & Spear) stops by to discuss a number of projects he has in the works-one of which is the launch of Subsume Media; per usual, we try to pick up some of the issues we couldn't cover from the last Grindhouse show;  more thoughts about Netflix' Umbrella Academy S2;  yet another horror story involving what appears to be the mistreatment of a black family mistakenly handcuffed (children forced to lay on the ground in the summer heat!) and held at gunpoint by Aurora, CO police

So folks (including actor Ryan Reynolds and his bride, Blake Lively) just deduced that maybe getting married on a former slave plantation isn't as bucolic as it seems, huh?;  in the aftermath of Hollywood enacting a type of voice acting realignment concerning animated portrayals in the media, some "voices" from The Simpsons are weighing in on the issue (from MarySue.com);  it looks like Mulan is heading for Disney plus after all....for a price on September 4th (how long will it take for Disney/Marvel's Black Widow to get the same deal?); Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and ex-wife, Dany Garcia buy the XFL for purportedly $15 million; so as Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. comes to close after seven seasons, how will the famed and fictional clandestine organization continue thematically as the MCU continues on the silver screen?;  thoughts about Beyonce's Black is King visual album:

Dburt asks...is anyone prepped to do our own Harlem Black Comic Book festival in a virtual format (a la SDCC and the more recently announced, NYCC?);  And lastly, Comicbook.com pontificates on where the animated Avatar "Airbender" franchise can go in the future.  Call in LIVE at 508-645-0100.

"I can tell by the masks that you're bad guys.  Nice touch.  Almost intimidating.  But the minivan ruins the effect. Maybe that's how y'all do it here in New Orleans, but the rest of the world--New York, Madripoor, Boise--the bad guys don't roll up in minivans.  And there ain't but three of you.  A van that big can comfortably seat eight.  Seems like you don't take your villainy serious."-Power Man (Luke Cage)

Hey Hey Hey Hey, it's that time again, people!  Kick up your feet and listen to the latest episode of Afronerd Radio's Grindhouse show, airing this Sunday at 6pm eastern-courtesy of the good folks at BTalk 100.  Join your favorite AFROnerdist hosts, Dburt and Claire Lanay (The Resident, Legacies) as they wax the night fantastic analyzing the following issues: finalizing our thoughts about last week's first virtual SDCC (San Diego Comic Con) "@Home" convention spurred on by our current national COVID-19 crisis; longtime friend of the show, Laina Dawes (What Are You Doing Here?: A Black Woman's Life and Liberation in Heavy Metal) stops by to discuss her current doctoral candidacy at Columbia University in Ethnomusicology and perhaps her thoughts about the urban (and urban alternative) music scene post COVID-19 and the George Floyd protests; President Trump threatens to ban the popular teen social media platform, TikTok over concerns about its connection with China; Dburt is enthralled (thus far) with Netflix' Umbrella Academy S2;

A Hollywood Reporter article brings analysis to Bryan Singer's BTS tumultuous stewardship of  FOX' X-Men franchise (including Michael Jackson vying for the Professor X role...hee hee); a new Business Insider piece reports on Marvel Comics' prior (and renewed) efforts to address its pledge to address diversity in the company in light of only hiring two black editorial staffers in five years;  Beyonce's Black is King hits the Disney plus streaming platform this weekend; Interesting....we see you, Sir Tony Todd!  A trailer for SYFY's Tales From The Hood 3 makes it to the internets:

And then there's the Fearless Netflix animated trailer showcasing some familiar voices from the Hip Hop and sports  entertainment community (i.e. Fat Joe, Angie Martinez, Dwyane Wade, Jadakiss and more):

The BGR.com website is reporting some fairly credible MCU plans involving the Hawkeye character as well as new/younger heroes coming into the fold for the franchise's impending phases; hey....one of the original blerds makes a return to form, Kadeem Hardison (A Different World), courtesy of Netflix' (again) Teenage Bounty Hunters:

Lastly, more real life "retconning" news pieces are starting to emerge-just when Dburt had a conversation about postbellum human zoo stories, NYC's Bronx Zoo apologies for its treatment of African Mbuti tribesman, Ota Benga more than a century ago....I guess better late than never (sigh). Call in LIVE at 508-645-0100.
