Black Superman!; Bill Maher & Megyn Kelly Talk Race; Yep, More Wandavision; Milestone Details; Blackness in Anime; Army of the Dead Trailer; Obama & Springsteen Podcast: Afronerd Radio's Grindhouse, SUN, 6pm EST

Channeling the Nike commercials from years back......Let's just do it!  Welcome to the latest installment of  Afronerd Radio's The Grindhouse broadcast-airing every Sunday at 6 p.m. eastern at BTalk 100. The topical sudoku puzzles to be decrypted this week are: it was announced earlier this week that filmmaker J.J. Abrams (Bad Robot) and prolific writer/graphic novelist, Ta-Nehisi Coates (Black Panther, Between the World Me) are teaming up to produce and script a new Superman movie (a Black Supes?);  Dburt checked out the Friday night episode of  Real Time with Bill Maher which included the show's  eponymous host interviewing former news correspondent, Megyn Kelly (Fox, NBC) about race and PC culture.  Something about the interview didn't sit right with (Black)Twitter or The Daily Beast:

We need to really speak about the penultimate episode of Disney+'s Wandavision as well as what to expect for the season (series?) finale; simply more Milestone news, including writer, Vita Ayala's new Static Shock gig (yay! or nay!);  TheMarySue.com site does a quick but sharp focus on how Blackness is depicted in Anime projects; while director, Zack Snyder is basking in the renewed interest in his forthcoming HBO Max Justice League film, his Army of the Dead trailer recently hit the cyberverse:

Legendary animator and comic book creator, Dwayne McDuffie finally gets his closeup in an upcoming Warner documentary; Lastly, former President Barack Obama has a podcast co-hosted by New Jersey rock legend, Bruce Springsteen and the show does dig deeper.....hence the reparations conversation

Rihanna's Homage to MLK (Is a Problem!); Can SOUL TV be Rebooted?; Blue Beetle's Spotlight; Black News Channel on the Rise; Live Action Big Hero 6?; "Excellence" @Kickstarter & More: The Mid Week Show, WED 8pm EST

Welcome to Afronerd Radio's Mid Week in Review broadcast airing every Wednesday at 8 pm eastern on the BTalk 100 platform.  Due to time constraints, we're just going to delve into the topics slated for discussion:  Dburt (and thankfully other folks on social media) was perplexed/angered concerning the above "ghettoized" image of Civil Rights icon, Dr. Martin Luther King used by popular songstress, Rihanna to adorn her Twitter page.  Is this ignorance, disdain, or a youthful need to "update" for the sake of relatability?; famed attorney and author, Lawrence Otis Graham (Our Kind of People, Member of the Club) dies at 59; several weeks ago we highlighted the exemplary PBS documentary, Mr. Soul, which lends focus to not only the groundbreaking nature of the late 60s/early 70s  Black culture TV series but also its host, the late Ellis Haizlip.  Now that the doc is out, your "friendly neighborhood" hosts ponder if  a rebooted show could exist in today's socio-political climate:

Finally...DC Films has just announced that they are bringing the character, Blue Beetle to the big screen as the studio's first Latinx superhero movie-including Charm City Kings director, Angel Manuel Soto to helm the project; well it looks like Disney is not going to produce a live-action version of their popular animated series, Big Hero 6 based on the late 90s obscure Marvel comic book IP;  our impressions of the premiere episode of the CW's Superman and Lois TV series and if the racial inclusivity issues raised by former show writer, Nadria Tucker are warranted; legendary filmmaker, Spike Lee switches to his producer hat for another Netflix project entitled "Gordon Hemingway & the Realm of Cthulhu"

Lastly, time willing, we will try to touch on several floating stories-TheRoot.com's piece on the evolution of the Black superhero; a burgeoning Black news channel is positioning itself as a player in the highly competitive media landscape; and our own, "Uncanny" Daryll B. is as prescient as ever with his recent acknowledgment of the Image Excellence comic series

Black Panther Salute vs. Job Security?; Prince Markie Dee of The Fat Boys Passes; J-Law Casting Debunked; Mortal Kombat & Invincible Trailers; Gatekeeping vs Canonical Respect; Marvel Netflix Redux & More! The Grindhouse, SUN 6pm EST

Howdy, loyal AFROnerdists!  Welcome to the umpteenth edition of Afronerd Radio's infamous Grindhouse broadcast-airing this Sunday at 6 p.m. eastern.  Pull up a chair and check out a new installment from the "steam engine" where we will be unpacking the following data:  a veteran NYC educator is filing suit promulgating a variety of allegations, one asserting she was fired for refusing to give the Wakanda salute; rapper/producer, Mark Anthony Morales aka Prince Markie Dee from the legendary classic hip hop trio, The Fat Boys passes at 52; actress, Jennifer Lawrence (Hunger Games, X-Men franchises) was rumored to be cast as Sue Storm aka The Invisible Woman for the forthcoming Marvel's  Fantastic Four reboot but that casting has since been debunked;  our impressions of two fully fleshed out trailers that were released this week-VG translation/reboot, Mortal Kombat, and Robert Kirkman's Invincible:

a recent Bleeding Cool op-ed highlights the growing "gatekeeping" presence in today's pop culture fandom.  Dburt has a more nuanced view of how observers have to be careful not to label mild disagreement as tantamount to gatekeeping; even more comic-related news, i.e. a new DCEU Supergirl being cast; thoughts about the Marvel-Netflix embargo being lifted and how (or if) those characters can be rebooted.  Lastly, Dburt has some thoughts about attaining Black generation wealth juxtaposed with how the tragic death of "blerd," Elijah McClain will forever haunt him.

This Past Sunday's Grindhouse Show Continues (Except it's The Mid Week in Review) Airing WED 8pm EST: Graphic Novelist, David Walker (The Black Panther Party) Stops By; Milestone Media; DC Comics Buyout Talk; Gina Carano

Because we (ok it was mostly, Dburt) were unable to get through many of the topics discussed during Sunday's Grindhouse broadcast, we will revisit the remaining subject matter for this Wednesday's Mid Week in Review show.  Afronerd Radio's Mid Week airs at 8 p.m. eastern, thanks to the good folks at BTalk 100.   Additional topics include:  friend of the "steam engine,"  multitalented filmmaker and comic book creator, David Walker stops by to discuss his latest project, The Black Panther Party, a graphic novel (illustrations courtesy of Marcus Kwame Anderson) focusing on the famed (and highly controversial) Black American political organization founded by activists/students., Bobby Seale and Huey P. Newton in 1966; and as mentioned previously, your AFROnerdist hosts will tackle other issues left on the proverbial kitchen table i.e.-the return of Milestone Media-

the firing of Gina Carano, "gay burger" restaurant joke that trended on Twitter but became a reality; iconic jazz artist, Chick Corea passes; filmmaker, Spike Lee is not against working with Marvel (but maybe not DC); DC comics buyout rumors and other comic book properties during BHM you should be reading.

Ray Fisher's Friends; "Gay Burger" Trends?; Gina Carano Fired; Wanda (vision) in "The Middle"; Milestone Returns; Judas & The Black Messiah + More; The Grindhouse Airs SUN, 6pm via BTalk 100

We hope our listenership is enjoying this Valentine Day's weekend but what better way is there to enjoy the break than to listen to Afronerd Radio's Grindhouse broadcast? And for the uninitiated, The Grindhouse airs every Sunday at 8 p.m. eastern on the BTalk 100 platform.  Your "not ready for prime time" AFROnerdist hosts will be unpacking the following topics: Cyborg/Justice League actor, Ray Fisher seems to be getting even more help from industry friends in the wake of allegations he levied against filmmaker, Joss Whedon for crass and unprofessional behavior while on set;  it appears what was once perceived as a joke, hence the term "gay burger," and its trending on Twitter is now a fully-realized restaurant IP.  The question remains when (and how) can blackness capitalize on ideas in a similar fashion?; former MMA and actress, Gina Carano loses her gig with Disney +'s Mandalorian TV series but lands on her proverbial feet thanks to conservative pundit, Ben Shapiro?;  thoughts about episode 6 of Wandavison including the identity of  Monica Rambeau's mystery contact (Reed Richards or Adam Brashear?); legendary jazz musician, Chick Corea passes at 79

It looks like a few folks (Daniel Kaluuya, Ryan Coogler) decided to revisit a different "Black Panther" story via this weekend's release of HBO Max' Judas and the Black Messiah film; and even more hype (is that possible?) is at play concerning the latest trailer for Zack Snyder's Justice League. A film also slated for an HBO Max  streaming release;

And lastly, the importance of Black comic book IPs becomes apparent via the return of Milestone Media during BHM and Black Sands garnering a 1M investment into its burgeoning publishing house.

The Super Bowl; A Supreme Loss: Mary Wilson; WandaVision's Reveal; BHM's Detractors; Black Lightning Final S4; Gorilla Glue vs Black Self Esteem; Falcon & Winter Soldier, Pacific Rim: The Black Trailers-Mid Week in Review 8pm EST

Hey folks! Let's keep it sharp and with a brevity of words.  It's the Post Super Bowl edition of Afronerd Radio's Mid Week in Review (MWIR) broadcast-airing this Wednesday at 8pm eastern. Listen to your favorite AFROnerdist hosts wax about the following topics:  well there's that less than exciting but overhyped SB matchup between the young upstart, Patrick Mahomes and the seasoned veteran better known as Tom Brady and well we all know how that turned out;  legendary Motown songstress and founding member of the iconic R&B group, The Supremes, Mary Wilson passes suddenly at 76; perhaps we'll finally discuss the implications stemming from the revelations shown om this past weekend's Wandavision series; Black History Month is in full swing but per usual there are detractors.  One is a rising Nigerian GOP politician from Michigan and the other is a school board from a Utah charter school; the CW's Black Lightning fourth and final season premieres this week;

Thoughts about a young woman jeopardizing her health by mistakenly using "gorilla glue" as a hair product; Marvel continues to churn out more engaging Disney + programming via the latest Super Bowl trailer for The Falcon and The Winter Soldier:

And then there's the Pacific Rim: the Black animated trailer:

Lastly, if time permits, we will tackle the Morgan Wallen n-word controversy, Keenu Reeves as Kraven and even more blerd/pop/pulp culture news

Black History Month Begins! Afronerd Radio's Mid Week in Review Airs WED, 8pm @BTalk 100: Wakanda Disney+ Series?; Justice Society Animated Trailer; Dburt's Late on "One Piece"; Is American Skin Black Tragedy Porn?

It's that time again, people....Black History Month!  So let's just make this simple and dive in! Listen to a new episode of Afronerd Radio's Mid Week in Review (MWIR) broadcast airing on the BTalk 100 platform this Wednesday at 8pm eastern.  The topics slated to be discussed are:  Dburt revisits the history of BHM, how it could be revitalized in the wake of George Floyd's death (and the departing Trump administration/Capitol Riots) and how current trends and competing agendas hopefully will not stagnate it as an annual observance; and then there's some interesting BHM comic book/graphic novel recommendations for our listeners and beyond;  Deadline reports that Black Panther filmmaker, Ryan Coogler has inked a 5-year Exclusive Disney TV deal with a Wakanda centric series in development; thoughts about some interesting trailers that hit the cyberverse like HBO's forthcoming Joss Whedon project, The Nevers:

And new DC Animated product entitled, Justice Society: World War II:

Oh and what kind of analogy was Sen. Ted Cruz attempting to make regarding The Watchmen and Avengers: Endgame?  His recent podcast diatribe caused agita for some on social media:

Dburt discovers the extremely popular anime franchise, One Piece twenty years later.....Lastly, does director, Nate Parker's American Skin movie fall under the umbrella of black tragedy porn?  And can American Slavery cinema also skirt under that same aforementioned umbrella?
