Afronerd Radio's Last Mid Week in Review Broadcast of '20! Airing on BTalk100, 8pm EST: A Year in Review & Expectations for '21; CALL LIVE-508-645-0100

Whelp....this is IT! Hopefully.  The end of an extremely unpleasant year and perhaps the final throes of the coronavirus pandemic.  Check out our final Mid Week installment for 2020, courtesy of BTalk 100-this Wednesday at 8pm eastern.  Listen to your favored AFROnerdist broadcasters as they provide their best assessment of the year from a "blerd" perspective: the COVID-19 crises, Trump presidency (most admired according to Gallup...really?); "shocking" celebrity deaths;

the killing of George Floyd (and other police misconduct cases) and the continued rise/legitimacy/scrutiny of the Black Lives Matter organization.  And then, of course, our encapsulation of black pulp/pop culture for 2020 and what to expect for 2021.

Afronerd Radio's Grindhouse Post Xmas Broadcast-SUN, 6pm: Soul & WW84 Streaming Reviews; Whodini's Ecstasy Passes; Onyx Equinox S1; Black Pop Culture Review of '20 & Predictions for '21; Charges of Racism vs Google & More!

Happy Holidays to all our patient and loyal listeners! Like James Brown's infamous band, The JB's, let's keep this post tight and out of sight!  Check out our post Xmas edition of Afronerd Radio's Grindhouse broadcast-airing this Sunday at 6pm eastern on BTalk 100.   The topics to be unpacked are as follows:  our impressions of the Christmas day release of two films (Soul and Wonder Woman 1984) that were slated for an early 2020 theatrical release but ended up on their respective streaming platforms due to the pandemic; yet another unfortunate death....John Fletcher a.k.a. Ecstasy from legendary classic hip hop act, Whodini passes at 56;

Did we ever talk about the fascinating and different animated landscape (Aztec/Mesoamerican culture) of Crunchyroll's Onyx Equinox and recently completed first season?; Dburt has apparently renewed his interest in anime during our current national difficulties (i.e. One Piece, Fire Force; Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?, The Seven Deadly Sins, Haikyu!! & more); more charges of racism are being levied against the tech giant Google, especially as it concerns HBCU recruitment;  Lastly, as we approach the end of an extremely stressful year and election season, we will discuss the highlights of 2020 in the black blerd space as well as thoughts about what to expect in '21.

Noel is in the Air & So is The Grindhouse @BTalk 100, SUN 6pm: Chadwick's Final Opus-Ma Rainey; Race & the COVID Vax Quagmire; CyberPunk 2077 Recall; Louis Armstrong Recontextualized

Our audience knows the deal! Let's jump in while the water is warm. Afronerd Radio's Grindhouse internet broadcast airs every Sunday at 6pm eastern-thanks to the good folks at BTalk 100. Listen to your preeminent AFROnerdist hosts wax about the following topics: the highly anticipated and melancholy showcase of the late Chadwick Boseman's work is on full display via Netflix. Our thoughts about his last performance in Ma Rainey's Black Bottom;  the inevitability of race and the dissemination of the COVID vaccine rears its ugly head.....again;  And then there's the confusion between what a UPenn ethics professor said about the vaccine versus FOX talking head, Tucker Carlson:

Next up, what's the deal with the Cyberpunk 2077 VG rollout? It appears that the highly anticipated video game with previous allegations of  "crunch time" issues now has to contend with a failure to launch due to glitches and bugs; another hat tip goes to consistent Afronerd Radio supporter, Sergio Mims for his recent concerning a new book that puts iconic Jazz trumpeter, Louis Armstrong in a different, if not more balanced context;  a plus sized model appearing in a Sports Illustrated magazine causes a heated debate on Twitter (at least with Afronerd and our listenership)....is it body positivity or capitulation to an unhealthy lifestyle?

If time permits, we might have to address some issues left on the metaphysical kitchen table from last Wednesday's Mid Week in Review show:  thoughts about the S2 Mandalorian finale with its surprise guest star;  so what's up with Coming 2 America, comedic icon, Eddie Murphy's 30 plus year sequel to Coming to America?  And lastly, what about Netflix' Canvas?....we need even more black animated depictions!

As The Yuletide Turns! The Mid Week In Review Airs WED, 8pm EST: Now Denzel is Mad at WarnerMedia; Soul! Documentary; Tom Cruise was right!; Smokey Robinson's Hanukkah; More Disney Investor Day Talk

OK..as a general principle, I'm against the idea of race-bending roles for canonical reasons BUT the awesome rendering of one of America's best actors, Denzel Washington (above), as the X-Men's Magneto would give even the most die-hard purist the chills. Just thinking out loud-perhaps this should be considered for the forthcoming Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness film. Enough of my blerd meandering....check out a new episode of Afronerd Radio's Mid Week in Review airing this Wednesday at 8pm eastern. The topics to be roasted on the "barbie" are: legendary actor/filmmaker, Denzel Washington, joins a growing list of notables that are critical of WarnerMedia's streaming TV goals; Dburt discusses a highly touted and historically significant documentary entitled Mr. Soul, which details the development of a pioneering PBS black cultural TV program, Soul!, which ran from 1968 to 1973 and hosted by Ellis Haizlip; Tom Cruise get s caught in an approved but awkward moment verbally chastising his MI-7 film crew for breaching COVID-19 protocols;  iconic musician/songwriter, Smokey Robinson caused a bit of a cultural kerfuffle for his mispronunciation of the holiday, Hanukkah; perhaps if time permits, there will be the further unpacking of Disney Investor Day announcements; Kudos to the inventors of the black owned barber shop app, Squire, which now reportedly has a 250M valuation;

In more black business news, Colorado based Tattered Cover is now the largest black owned bookstore in the U.S.; Major League Baseball announces that they are elevating the Negro Leagues to Major League status gives further credence to what Dburt has been saying all along....racial integration on a financial level is more crucial than social; ok....I'll bite....what's this about black folk getting superpowers on December 21st? (a real life My Hero Academia quirk?  Kwanza Osajyefo's Black?) regrettably another Lizzo hot take (black vs "fat" identity?) and lastly, were (women) reviewers of color given access to Wonder Woman 1984?

A New Grindhouse Show Airs SUN, 6pm EST @BTalk 100: Disney Investors Day; RIP to Charley Pride & Tiny Lister; Kugali's Iwaju @Disney; Chadwick Irreplaceable For Black Panther 2; Lando Series; Danny Glover's Predator 2: History of the Crossover

Hey, AFROnerdists!  Let's make this quick, shall we?  Listen to the latest sonic interlude of Afronerd Radio's The Grindhouse airing this Sunday at 6pm eastern. Oh and our broadcast is engineered by the good folks at BTalk 100.  Join your favored AFROnerdists hosts as they decipher the "Da Vinci Code" for the following subject matter:  our impressions of Disney's Investor Day announcements a la-the House of Ideas dba Marvel does it again with a whole host of forthcoming streaming TV programs coming to the Disney Plus platform; oh and there was a lot of other non Marvel IPs that were unveiled as well:

more regrettable and iconic deaths are occurring toward the close of an extremely stressful year-legendary African-American country music performer, Charley Pride passes at 86 and notable character actor and wrestler, Tom "Tiny" Lister also died (62 yrs of age)-both men appeared to have been suffering from COVID-19; former guests of the Afronerd Radio "steam engine,"  pan-African comic publisher, Kugali Media, have moved onward and upward thanks to their Disney partnership.....enter a Wakanda-esque animated series entitled, Iwaju;

And more on the Black Batman arc at DC, courtesy of John Ridley; Marvel Studios president, Kevin Feige has formally stated that the late Chadwick Boseman will not be replaced in the Black Panther sequel....so the fans have to wait to see what that exactly means; another former guest of our steam engine, Justin Simien has also garnered a deal with Disney-this time pertaining to a Lando Calrissian project;  Lastly, another hat tip/suggestion from resident supporter, Sergio Mims, we will shed some well deserved "light" on the 1990 sequel film, Predator 2, starring acting legend/activist, Danny Glover. Does the sequel get enough credit for its early portrayal of a black action lead?  Or it's early introduction of the idea of a shared universe (pre MCU/DCEU?).

BTalk 100 Presents The Mid Week in Review (MWIR), Live Broadcast 6pm EST: Rashida Jones@MSNBC; Youtuber, Kevin Samuel's Viral Brutality?; Human Steaks?; Nolan Rips HBO Max; Marvel's MCU Multiverse & More!

B(l)ack by popular demand.....it continues to be the Holiday Season edition of Afronerd Radio's Mid Week in Review (MWIR) as engineered by the good folks at BTalk 100.  Listen to a new episode this Wednesday at 8pm eastern.  The topical ornaments being placed on the Christmas tree this week are: a fellow Hamptonian, Rashida Jones (not to be confused with the noted actress with the same namesake) was just named president of the cable news channel, MSNBC;  popular Youtuber/Image Consultant, Kevin Samuels continues to ruffle feathers with his latest viral video in which he critiques a woman seeking dating advise.  Did he go too far?

A recent article in the NY Times, highlighted an exhibit at the Design Museum showcasing steaks that were purportedly created from human cells-sparking cries of interest and outrage;  legendary filmmaker, Christopher Nolan had some rather choice words relating to Warner Media's announcement about moving their entire slate of 2021 theatrical films to their HBO Max streaming medium;  with the latest news that respected actor, Albert Molina, will be reprising his Doc Ock character for the next Spiderman film, The Hollywood Reporter posits that the forthcoming "multiverse" storylines could forecast the Marvel's MCU going forward; and in more MCU, specifically Disney plus news, there appears to be some growing controversies on the set of the upcoming Ms. Marvel streaming series culminating into a #FixMsMarvel hashtag;  and what about the new trailer for American Skin by Nate Parker (Birth of a Nation) as presented by Spike Lee:

so folks are really going to have pop culture conventions when vaccinations for the COVID virus are just starting to roll out?.....enter Anime Dallas; picking up a few scraps that we failed to discuss from last Sunday's Grindhouse;  notable actor, Viggo Mortensen in a new Independent article, is still pretty sore about whitewashing criticisms levied toward his 2018 film, The Green Book;  Lastly, thoughts about upcoming VG release of Cyberpunk 2077, the alleged expansiveness of the game and how closely its development mirrors movie production.

The Holiday Season is Afoot! The Grindhouse @6pm EST on BTalk100; Did Past Black Capes & Sci-fi Movies Help/Hurt Future Flicks?; New HBO Max Radical Move; Letitia, Anti-Vaxxer? Naomi @CW & More

We're off to the Yuletide races, folks!  Happy Holidays and welcome to another fascinating episode of Afronerd Radio's Grindhouse broadcast-airing this Sunday at 6pm eastern on the BTalk 100 platform. Listen to your "friendly neighborhood cyber radio hosts" as they unravel the following mysteries: thanks to a hat tip from Afronerd Radio supporter, Sergio Mims-we decided to do a "deep dive" into past black themed (or actor lead) sci-fi/superhero movies (Brother From Another Planet, Blankman, Blade) that helped (or hurt) the current explosion of genre black films like Black PantherWarner Media announced that they are moving their entire slate of 2021 theatrical films to their HBO Max streaming service in tandem with theaters as the COVID crisis continues; Black Panther actress, Letitia Wright (Shuri) found herself receiving internet backlash for her sharing of an anti-vaccine video on Twitter; noted graphic novelist and friend of the show, David Walker, continues to move onward and upward with the announcement that his (and Brian Michael Bendis) IP, Naomi is in development as a CW TV series; Oh and it doesn't hurt that filmmaker, Ava Duvernay is working on the adaptation;

Google has some 'splaining to do in the wake of the firing of black scientist and AI ethicist, Timnit Gebru purportedly over her questioning of the company's diversity protocols...hmm-maybe it's just a coincidence (ha..); Dburt is enthused about Crunchyroll's new Mesoamerica themed animated series, Onyx Equinox;  TheMarySue.com reports that the TV ratings system, Nielsen affirms that diversity is strongest streaming and genre television (and Dburt asks how does that connect to inclusion in ownership?); oh yeah....one of Afronerd Radio's favorite series, Warrior just finished its 2nd season with no third season announcement as Cinemax is closing their doors for HBO Max;  Is DC's Plastic Man finally getting a film translation or is there a gender bend with the casting? ; and in more HBO Max news, is the burgeoning streaming service going to develop international adaptations of their DC heroes for varied global territories?  And lastly, one has to ask-how do you confuse former President Barack Obama with a caricature of a rapper (all done in blackface, of course)?....just pose your questions to Russian television (just wow):

The Mid Week in Review (MWIR) Airing This WED, 8pm EST; Live Call in #508-645-0100; Topix-Twerkgate in TX?; Star Trek 4 Scrapped?; Van Helsing Reboot?; David Ramsey Back at CW; Spectrum's Suit Revealed?

And per usual, time is moving as quickly as Wally West going out for a brief cross country jog! Welcome to the a new episode of Afronerd Radio's Grindhouse internet broadcast-airing every Wednesday at 8pm eastern on the BTalk 100 platform.  Listen to your cosmic ray infused AFROnerdist hosts elucidate about the following topics: our thoughts regarding a lack of social grace story occurring at black owned Dallas restaurant that dared to admonish patrons who wanted to twerk at the establishment (#Twerkgate);  more about an interesting discovery from #ADOS (American Descendants of Slavery) history-the last known slave ship (the Clotilda) found at the bottom of an Alabama river and the community of survivors that still exists;

so it appears that all hope may be lost for a Star Trek (#4) to be officially greenlighted; Dburt always wondered why Hugh Jackman's '04 Van Helsing film never became a franchise.....well, Universal might be looking to dust off the property for a reboot;  according to Deadline.com, Arrowverse actor, David Ramsey is slated to return to his John Diggle character (as well as direct) in some capacity for the CW;  you can always trust the toy lines to disclose certain things in the nerd universe, hence the cyberverse might've gotten a peak at Marvel's Spectrum/Monica Rambeau's future MCU costuming for Disney plus and beyond;

A recent Slate piece deconstructs the dangerous (and perhaps insidious) reason the extremely popular syndicated Breakfast Club radio show has been positioned to be a beacon for alleged communal black political thought; still addressing scraps from our past Grindhouse sonic meal;  interesting that one of Dburt's favorite actors, Vincent D'Onofrio when asked about which shows would he like to  appear on in the future, he listed a number of geek "all-star" programs...oh and we never did address his #SaveDaredevil petition; Lastly, the Starz trailer for the upcoming Run The World Tv series looks like it's channeling Issa Rae's beat:
