Part 2 of Daryll B.'s Blog Droppings! Onward & Upward to NYC's Black Comic Con!

Is Daryll Still Alive in there? He went into the room a day ago....

Getting ready to go to Black Comic-Con at Schomburg Center in Harlem today but I have unfinished business with you AfroNerd and Facebook Readers. SO before I get into reviews, DC released descriptions for Week 3 of Convergence and well, those who love to shovel dirt on me get more ammo:

Week Three by    Writer(s)     Artist(s)  Hook

Adventures of Superman #1-2 by Marv Wolfman, Roberto Viacava and Andy Owens - Pre-Crisis Supergirl returns
The Flash #1-2 by Dan Abnett with Federico Dallocchio - All the talking up I have done about Dan Abnett and he gets his hands on The Flash.
Hawkman #1-2 by Jeff Parker, Tim Truman and Enrique Alcatena - Another favorite writer of mine Jeff Parker gets his hands on of the most historically confusing heroes of all time. But from his Agents of Atlas and Aquaman work, Parker should make Hawkman *gasp* fun....
Justice League America #1-2 by Fabian Nicieza and Chriscross - 3 words: Detroit. Justice. League.
New Teen Titans #1-2 by Marv Wolfman, Nicola Scott and Marc Deering - ANOTHER favorite writer, drawn by the fabulous Nicola Scott featuring MY TITANS vs the Tangent Universe's Doom Patrol.
Superboy and the Legion of Super-Heroes #1-2 by Stuart Moore, Gus Storms and Mark Farmer - Come on. It the Legion of Super-Heroes. You KNOW I have to pick this up...

Another 6 out of 11 week....then Week Four I get

Booster Gold #1-2 by Dan Jurgens, Alvaro Martinez and Raul Fernandez
Infinity Inc. #1-2 by Jerry Ordway and Ben Caldwell
Justice Society of America #1-2 by Dan Abnett, Tom Derenick and Trevor Scott
World’s Finest Comics #1-2 by Paul Levitz, Jim Fern and Joe Rubinstein
Crime Syndicate #1-2 by Brian Buccellato and Phil Winslade
Blue Beetle #1-2 by Scott Lobdell & Yishan Li
Shazam #1-2 by Jeff Parker and Evan “Doc” Shaner
Plastic Man and the Freedom Fighters #1-2 by Simon Oliver & John Mccrea

That's another 8 out of 11 WITHOUT solicitations but only by my love of the characters alone. Throw in the 8 main parts of the event and I am getting 36 out of 48 books. Yeah I know I have to make cuts without having to rob a bank but like I said last blog: DC you win! I stand defeated.... Now let me get to reviewing....

Earth 2 Worlds End 15 - Got to admit, I didn't think they would  have the guts to do it but..... with the world going to heck, I guess there was no choice. I am also enjoying the angsty Dick Grayson... never thought I'd say that.....

Q2: The Return of Quantum and Woody 4 - Yeah, I going to need a scorecard now. So many iterations that I am confused as to who's who... Then BAM! It makes sense... Only in Q&W folks...

Justice League United 8 - This did feel like wheels were spinning until the last act (5 pages) and then 2 sides of worst case scenarios played simultaneously.... but I have an abundance of Legionnaires now...

All New Captain America 3 - First one of the new series where Sam Wilson actually acted AND felt like Captain America. Still, Marvel, with that cover are you guys tone deaf to the news over the last 3 or 4 months? The NFL is STILL dealing with these issue ya know?!?!?!?

Miles Morales, Ultimate Spider-Man 9 - *CLAPS* Thank you Mr. Bendis for sticking this landing. I will gladly eat my plate of crow because not only did Mr. Morales' secret origin make sense...but you made his abandoning of Miles ring truly realistic... just as Miles' world is about to get rocked..(judging by the last page picture and revelations we know are upcoming from issue 7!)

Astro City 19 - Continued Quarrel's Origin and they get further into the ties between her and Crackerjack. Imagine the Green Arrow-Black Canary relationship crossed with Charlie Brown and Lucy's. Then toss in the old anything you can do I can do better Like Mike commercials from the 90's. I was equal parts absorbed and laughing hard at this one...

Star Wars 1 - Wow. This one hit the warp drive running. I am of two minds regarding Jason Aaron's writing but here...it felt o so natural and right. John Cassaday's art was on point and once again, that last page. Star Wars Purists might be equal parts pissed and intrigued but the image will have EVERYONE coming back for issue 2....

For those who are digging Agent Carter on TV right now, I can't recommend Operation S.I.N. #1 enough. Katheryn Immonen captures the Carter-Stark relationship perfectly...

I know it says it on the cover, but little kid in me wasn't ready for the events in Battlestar Galactica Death of Apollo #2. Damn dirty Cylons....

PICK UP SHAFT #2...lol. I can't hype up the book enough for example last week we had writer David Walker back on:

    http://www.blogtalkradio.com/afronerd/2015/01/10/agent-carter-ant-man-more-the-grindhouse-saturday-6pm-est

...yeah we really love this book..as  if you couldn't tell....

Star Trek/Planet of the Apes #1.... As if I couldn't resist picking this one up? This book is like Daryll specific crack. Damn you Dynamite!

Empire of the Dead Act Two #5..."And then everything comes to a head. At all once. As we fade to black..."  I have to wait until April for the final act to start...GRRRRR

S.H.I.E.L.D. #1 & 2...If you love Agent Coulson, pick this up. If you love Fitz and Simmons, pick this up. If you crave to see the TV show team interact with the literary Marvel Universe...what the crikey are you waiting for? Pick it up!

S.I.P. Kids #2 is the perfect book for Strangers in Paradise fans who adore Charlie Brown and Peanuts... Slapstick adolescent moments with an undercurrent of whoa for those who remember the kiddos' grown up selves....

Captain America and the Mighty Avengers #3 sees the team take on the inverted Avengers from Axis. Yeahhhh... I can't wait to see the ramifications from this because there is NO WAY to smooth over some of the conflicts here neatly....

Ant-Man #1 sees Scott Lang acting more like Eric O'Grady than Hank Pym...but there is no denying that the never-do-well type bad luck has a way of pulling the reader in to sympathize with the main character. Especially in terms of him trying to be a good dad.....

Guardians 3000 #4 has one of my favorite 90's characters return at the end of the book as we delve into an updated retelling of Vance Astro's origin. Book reads like an intensive information dump but I liking it as it hopefully foreshadows an insane rollercoaster ride upcoming for the heroes.....

All New Ultimates #10 marks the end of the book unfortunately bit Fiffe, ends up tying up all the plots in a nice bow. My gripe: I wish this issue's artist worked the whole book. I am not ashamed to admit that I like "clean" superhero art and the book did not have it...until the end..

Astonishing Spider-Man and Wolverine sees, in my opinion, the two sides of Jason Aaron's writing. The first two issues are confusing but intriguing. The remaining issues are an insane ride of emotions for the titular hero "team". Andy Kubert kills the art here as his fight scenes and quiet moments are top notch and I got to admit, this is one of Aaron's better works....

*PHEW* That's a lot of books...and I have the Black Comic-Con at Schomburg Center in Harlem coming up in a few hours. Yeah. Mind? What mind? Folks that stuck through this insane rambling journey of mine? Know that I appreciate you giving me your time...even if it is to laugh at my ass. I can't do this without y'all.

Next week, get ready for me to delve into the realm of horror for a bit and I try to see if my wallet can survive another comic shoppe trip. Right now, I have to get to the show. Until Next Week, Keep Fantasizing!
